I know you guys have this mold. If you use it in 30-06 what load. I cast 400+ of these last weekend.

31gr H4895, Lyman Super Moly Lube, about 1800fps, nose beagled to .300 and driving bands to .310.

Want to get an older mold as I hear and read they MAY toss a bigger bullet.

Try Frank Marshall's load of 21 gr of 4759. I have an older mold that casts big also. About .313.

'284 is my favorite bullet for 30 calibers. I started with Marshall's 21 grains of SR 4759 using linotype bullets and they worked well. But for me, they leaded right in front of the chamber with ww's + 2% tin. They are 10 grains heavier, softer and smaller.

My shooting pardner and I have 4 moulds for this: early one piece Ideal (.298/309), 70's (.302/.313) 80's (.300/.313) and 00's (.299/.310). Each is an individual and depending upon how much the cherry has been sharpened, what size they cast.

I cast my 3211284s from WW alloy, size to 0.309 or 0.310, taper in an Eagan die ( same taper as the throat), load 11.5 gr 2400 and set bullet out to seat into the lands.

Velocity at 10 feet is about 1250fps; average group size is less than 1.0 inches at 100 yards for 5-shot groups. This is not a fluke, I get these results on a regular basis.

I was out of my mind when I wrote the above. The correct load is 11.5 grains of UNIQUE.

I would guess that 311284 would shoot well out of the 30-30 as I think I remember FM articles. I don't remember if they will work in the .308... will they extend down into the powder below the neck?

Depends on the throat and seating depth. I've shot it in both catridges with 4759. It was definitely fun out of the old Marlin in 30-30. Don't remember the load off hand, but I could see the rounds going down range with a scope! The Savage in 308 was another story. It didn't work out but that was my fault. Got alot of leading that, in retrospect, was probably due to copper fouling still in the barrel. In both cases, I was seating the bullet for single loading to lightly engrave the bullet when the action is closed.

I have had this blt for many years. It was the first mold I bought (used), and it is still in use only now I have it HP'd. My best load for it in 06 is 22 gr of 2400. Good luck!

I've just loaded some up for a Long Lee Metford in .303” British from an NEI mould that drops this design at 313".

Lubed with Carnauba Red and fitted with a gator check over 19gns of VV N110 it shoots really well.

Its seated out to the bottom lube groove and that bore riding nose just fits nice and snug when chambered.

I've used this mold off and on for 50 yrs or so, it's a good one. My favorite load is 20 gr of H110 cast of ww + 2% tin hand lubed with Canadian Tire Moly grease( I think Mobile actually makes the grease) sized .311 Grouch

My 100 yd. load for CBA competition with my Issue 03-A3 for the past 7 years has been 27.0 grains of H4895 behind a Lyman 311284 lino bullet. From my mold, this bullet weighs about 201.0 to 201.5 gr. and hits around 1625 fps 15 ft. from the muzzle. Bullet is sized 0.311. Lube is Javelina. This is one of the older 284 molds, and a Hornaday gas check won't quite fit on the bullet unless I open it (the check) up just a tiny bit. I know, that's a PITA, but that load will pretty much guarantee to give me a 100 yd. score in the middle 90's every time, so I figure it's worth it.

Hope this gives you a good place to start from.

13.0 Red Dot. Never shot it for group, but have won my share of 200Yd reduced X-course, and 200M silhouette matches with it. Shoot bullets as-cast, lube bottom 2 grooves in a .313” die with Javelina or modern equivalent 50/50 beeswax/alox, beer can gas check.I used to use 15-17 grains of 2400 but Red Dot seems to work the brass better and cases don't get progressively shorter with each firing.

I have been using a single cavity Ideal #311284 for almost 40 years now, in everything from .30-30 (bless you Frank Marshall) to .30-40 and .30-06. It drops a bullet of WW+tin at .312 which leaves a lot of wiggle room for sizing to fit various .30 throats. Nose bearing is dead on .300 which is a fair compromise for in the various rifles I shoot it in.Is it my “bestest” mold? No, but it is a steady performer. If one can develop nostalgia for a mold, I certainly have with this one. My only regret is its single cavity. Perhaps one day I'll get a spiffy 4-cavity aluminum mold to replace it, and have one of the cavities be a hollow point. But then it wouldn't be quite the same would it?

How cool is it that a mould designed over 100 years ago is still one of the best out there? Awesome. Never seen a bad report of the 284.

As an added note with the 311284, or any other bullet. Have you tried different mixes to see if it improves accuracy? I have tried Lyman #2 mix 50/50 lead/tin and 1%tin. My best mix in my rifles is a mix of 15lbs Pb, 25# mag shot & 2% tin. For lube the NRA lube 50%beeswax& 50 Alox gives the best results.
