Greetings,

Welcome to the forum.  I too shoot cast 45-70 in a couple rifles, if you are interested in my journey with the 45-70s check them out in the forums.  I shoot only Black Powder by choice, and am well pleased with the results I have achieved; won't win international competition but keep the bullets in heart of caribou groups out to 100 yards (my personal limit of distance for shooting game).

I have greatly enjoyed the forum since joining, hope the same goes for you.

Greetings,

The photo is of reindeer.  Some of the differences are reindeer can be domesticated but caribou cannot, caribou are a bit larger, and some reindeer can fly one night a year and may sport a large red nose.  Well, the first two anyway.  They are able to interbreed.

The reindeer and caribou bulls all lose their antlers in the winter, and the cows do if they are not gravid.  So, when you see Santa being pulled by eight tiny reindeer, keep in mind it takes 8 pregnant cows to haul around that merry old elf.

My second year hunting caribou I did not yet know that the bulls all lose their antlers, and passed up some really nice bulls late season as they had clean heads.  I couldn't low enough to tell if bull or cow, and that year it was bulls only.  So, I watched them wander into the tundra.  Made that mistake only one year.

Hi TK

Thanks for the update will keep an eye in the sky next year ! Your right about them being domesticated , they were herded in huge mobs of 4-500 spread over a large area and were moved by nomadic herders living in tents much like your Native American Indians did or do still possibly, all the deer  had a leather collar on them and all of the Antlers were trimmed for the velvet, I worked up there for 3 winters but only saw the Reindeer herds twice and were pretty impressive.

No shame in watching animals wander off if your not sure, I live in New Zealand and regularly watch deer in the hills after taking one or sometimes don't even take a rifle just go to look at and study them, we don't have a season here its year round for hunting so a fair bit of pressure on them, next month planning on taking my 1886 in 45/70 for a walk so watch this space !

Have a good day
