Part of bullet casting 101 is first melting your lead. So!

Saw this and thought I'd pass it along. I don't have one yet but I will soon.

Looks to be  a good deal, much better burner than the one I have. But it's just too low to the ground for me. But you could raise it on a concrete block set up to whatever height you needed.

Mine is a re-purposed turkey cooker. Only way to go.    Ross

mrbill2,

Looks like you made a good choice. The cooker looks strong enough to support 200 pounds of lead.

I made a larger melting pot by cutting top off a small 20 lb propane tank.

My regulator valve acts erratic so I may convert to a more simple off/on valve.

10-4 on the propane tank. I was going to buy one from one of the venders on castboolits but it cost more to ship than what the finished tank costs. Bummer!

I like my my big burner,it gets the lead and molds hot fast. What I am occaisionally stunned by are the references to large amounts of lead being either processed or cast. Do you all really shoot that much?  A big day for me is 20lbs, and that's a Big day. Usually less than 200 bullets.  Ross

I found propane tank at the scrap yard. I used a cut off wheel to halve tank, but you may be able to use a Sawzall. I flushed the tank out with water before cutting.

Over the years I have collected lead and cast bullets with forgotten alloys. There comes a time when you must put it all in the same melting pot to prevent confusion.

Walmart sells a thick one piece aluminum muffin pan that works great for ingots. Do not use the type that has the crimped on cups...these will fall apart easily after first pour. Use a soaking wet towel underneath pan to cool ingots faster. Remove glasses when pouring to prevent fogging up. Believe me... your glasses will fog so badly (steam) you will be pouring blind.

Well I get to the range 1 or 2 times a week and send 50 to 100 rounds down range. Now that I'm 74 things are slowing down. Also lost my shooting buddy last year and that makes a big difference. But it's like a fisherman, you can never have too many lures or too much LEAD.

Here's mine.   $5 at a yard sale.  Note structure - have done 300 and 400 lb batches (in stainless keg cut down a bit).

I highly suggest the additional use of a weed-burner!  You put the flames right on the allow speeding up the process.

Agree with propane tank - heavy enough to handle it.  You can get beer kegs for free after many college parties and right at the end of the school year - they leave them all over!

TRK: Do you find kegs  that aren't made of aluminum?  I just made a pot out of a propane tank last week and I think it will be large enough for my needs, unless of course I come across that sailboat keel I'm always on the look out for..Like OUB12 I used a cut off wheel after leaving the tank full of water for three days. Not at all hard to do and the pot will hold a lot of lead. Gp

STAINLESS kegs ONLY!!  I would NEVER use aluminum (because the temperatures are so close to the melting point of AL).

Note that a 300-400 lb batch is SCAREY!   It's a lot of molten alloy that would be unstoppable if ....
