Due to the Washington I-1639 passing I'm jumping on the bandwagon out of protest. First one is a kit (5.56)  with an 80% lower. This is of course only the beginning of the rabbit hole.

I'm hoping for some suggestions for a good book to purchase and read on the subject.

Also looking for any advice specific to cast bullets in an AR. .223/5.56 or is there a better choice for my second one?

Mark,

One at Amazon dot com has been suggested to me, but right now I can't remember the title or author.

Go to AMazon, click on books, write in "AR rifles" into search engine, and see what comes up.

Mark,

I have built several. Most of the lowers are built by the same manufactures and there is little difference between. I would go with one of them rather than a 80%. The best books are:

Competitive AR15 Builder's Guide or AR-15 Rifle Builder's Manual: An Illustrated, Step-by-Step Guide to Assembling the AR-15 Rifle

All books by Glen Zediker are good. The best source for supplies is Palmetto State Armory

Also Gun Digest has a series (3 or 4 books?) by Patrick Sweeney that can be found at various bookstores that are very good but the best place to start is the Military manuals - I have USMC TM 05538C-23&P/2 Organizational and Intermediate Maintenance that gives the basics plus parts and tools for starting.  Hope this helps.  PSA has everything from parts to assembled units, plus a myriad of after market parts and assemblies. I built a lower with a match trigger from kits which are best to be sure your parts are compatible.  Since you can now use a scope for NRA HP, either service or match, this platform in really adaptable and can be reasonable.  Just the basic AR's are highly accurate and can be enhanced as your budget allows.  Have fun.

I've purchased 100% lowers for as low as $29.00.  The key to building an AR to shoot cast is to purchase a 12" twist barrel.  I recently built a designated cast bullet AR15 in 5.56 Wilde by contracting McGowen to build me a 20" 1 in 12" twist barrel with pistol porting.  Using an adjustable gas block opened up all the way with a non weighted buffer and 2" cut off a mainspring gives 100% cycling and excellent accuracy.  i use 10 gr of 2400 for 2000 fps.  Others have built AR's that will cylce with faster twists and carbine ported barrels but then resort to larger porting holes in the barrel and reduced powder charges of 4895, etc...I believe the faster twist barrels are counter to good accuracy with cast bullets and I wanted to use my load that has proven itself to be accurate in my bolt guns.  If I choose to shoot jacketed 55 gr bullets in this AR, all I have to do is close the gas block and fit the lower with a weighted buffer and full strength main spring.

Because I said so!
