I have tested a 1903A3 with a bullet close to yours.

Bullet: Lee TL309-230-5R, these cast large and were sized .3105 and tumble lubed 45:45:10 twice/no check on boat tail.

Brass: Winchester, Lee Coller Neck Sized

charge: 44.3 gr H4831SC

velocity: clocked 2015 fps

Accuracy : consistently less than 2” at 100 yards

NOTE, I also tried this bullet backwards with the same charge and accuracy was better.

I also tried H4895 35.6 gr plus BPI filler to neck bottom. clocked 1995 fps and similar accuracy in the 1903A3

My best shooting bullet from the O3A3 is the Lee C312-185-1R in Lyman #2 sized/checked .3105 and tumble lubed. LOA=3.105"

32 gr Rel 7, clocked 2170 fps Accuracy consistently under 1/2” @50 yards. I hollow point the bullet for this load for Deer hunting with the large Forster hollow pointing bit in  a drill press on loaded ammo. Great proven Deer load or bench match load if that is what you are looking for.

My 1903A3 was built from all new unused old arsenal parts and is a beauty that I was first to fire and I fire only cast. I did polish the bore before any firing with my polishing method in the Accuracy section of this forum.

Gary,

Thanks very much for taking the time to share your experience in great detail with me!

I shoot the military rifle cast bullet matches, and I wish to find a PB bullet that shoots

As well or better than 311299 with GC at 100 and 200yds. Your experience gives me hope that I can.

Ray my seriously best recommendation for the 1903A3 is that Lee C312-185-1R in #2 alloy sized/checked for a throat slide fit and H4895 that even shoots better than Rel7. I've burned a lot of both plus H380 and IMR7383. They all shoot match well for me with that bullet and a 3.105” LOA @ ~2,000 fps. If you don't get the throat fit, they all shoot all over the place from the rifle.

Springfield: I bought the NOE blackout in the 247 gr version so I would have a PB bullet for the groundhog shoot. All my GC bullets did not do well shot naked. My best results was to really slow things down and best accuracy was 17 gr. 4759 in 30-06, 1-10 twist remington 700. I think the 230 gr would work better as my rifle likes 195 to 220 grn bullets pushed by 30 grs 4895. Could not find a good or even decent load of 4895 for that big boolit.  Ross

Ross,

Thanks for sharing your experience. I looked at the bullet drawing again and realized that because of the length of the truck or driving band portion of the bullett vs the length of th cartridge neck, the base of the bullet would extend beyond the neck into the case. Not good, it my opinion for a lead bullet, especially a naked one with a moderate load. Your results seem to confirm this.

thanks again

Ray
