Got my BRAND SPANKING NEW N. O. E.  MOLD in the mail on Thursday. Prepped it that night. Was out to the Patio to set up for casting 1st thing yesterday morning.  Adjusted the mold guide on the old RCBS Pro-Melt. Turned on the hot plate & set the mold to warm up. Filled the pot with 20lbs of #2 alloy, cranked her all the way up. As soon as the liguidus rose half way up the pot I turned it down to 700degress. waited 10min after the last ingot dropped out of sight & checked temp. 725degress, best I can hope for with that old pot, going back to RCBS real soon.  Started casting, dropping onto cloth pad, winkles, winkles, winkles. did 10 pours, no good bullets. Cranked hot plate all the way to max, scrubbed out mold cavities with acetone. Put back on hot plate. dumped rejects back into pot, dumped rubber gloves. Waited 10min for pot to come back up to temp, drank coffee. put on new gloves Cast up samples for hardness testing with 1cav .45 mold.

Took BRAND SPANKING NEW  N. O. E  MOLD from hot plate. Poured 1st fill into mold, counted to 10, struck off sprue & dumped four PERFECT BULLETS on to pad. AND THEY SPARKLED!!!!!!!!!, HOW THEY DID SPARKLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THEY WERE 4 OF THE MOST PERFECT BULLETS I'VE EVER SEEN; Flawless bases with perfectly cut sprues, filled out Round Flat Noses without a blemish.  A Tumble-Lube design, with every little groove just perfect. Dumped the rest of the "run" into the quenching bucket. I bought a Top Punch to go along with it. I Tumble-Lubed 100 of them last night. This morning I shoved 100 bullets into a .430dia size die on my old LYMAN 450. That TOP PUNCH worked perfect, can't see any kind of mark on the bullet noses AT ALL. I Tumble-Lubed them again. They're standing up on a waxpapered old cookie sheet drying right now.

I know you're not supposed to size TL design bullets. But they came out of the mold at .4315dia, just like I wanted. So I sized them to .430dia, just like I wanted. I've never liked dry sizing bullets so rather than do that I TL'ed them because I have a bottle of LEE ALOX that's been on my bench for ages. And since I had it I was going to use it my way.

The next 100 are going to be conventionally LUBED in the old 450 at same time they're sized.

I AM EXTREMELY HAPPY WITH MY NEW  N.O. E.  MOLD. TL432-243-RF 4 cavity PB

Heck, I just realized I haven't even weighed any yet. gotta get on that tomorrow.

BigMan54;

You, with some effort, can adjust the thermometer on the RCBS Pro Melt. You may or may not want to do this. I have two of them but they haven't been a problem. However, I had a friend who had one that wouldn't get hot enough (it was a "new to him" pot). You have to remove the rivets in the sheet metal shroud. This exposes the thermometer. It is a bi-metal therm (looks like a clock spring). One direction raises the temp and one way lowers the temp. Leave the shroud off until it is adjusted to your preference (using an accurate lead thermometer). Then re-rivet the shroud with a pop riveter. After the friend's pot was adjusted it worked perfectly for years afterwards.

In another life, when quite young, I was a home appliance repairman. The thermometer was quite similar to the therms in the old steam irons. The RCBS therms are made to be adjusted. The only problem is getting access. Hence, removing the shroud... In those long agone days, we didn't replace an appliance, we fixed them (it was financially viable to do so, then).

Or-r-r, call RCBS and ship it back to them for them to do it...

Just a thought or two...

Dale53,

This is an old pot, About 36yrs, I believe. So while I appreciate your idea, RCBS will go through the pot completely and fix anything it needs.

Yep I remember my Grandmother taking in her steam iron, toaster and radio.

However I might ask for your help again for my LYMAN Mag 20. Working OK now ? but ya never know. And since it's now out of production LYMAN won't touch it.

Thanks,

Rog
