Rifle Rebore

Hello All: I have a heavy barrel NEF Handi rifle  308Win that I picked up at a local pawn shop. I'm thinking about a re-bore to 358Win. I believe the barrel to be large enough in diameter to accommodate this, .808 at the muzzle. The longest 35cal bullet I have a mould for is the Saeco #352, it's 1.30 long and weighs 240gr. I also have the 200gr. NOE (RCBS copy that is .900 long. Greenhill charts show a max 1.19 long 282gr. max for a 1 in 16 twist and 322gr. 1.37 inch long max for a one in 14 Any thoughts as to advantages in 14 vs. 16 twist for a rifle that will just shoot cast? Other than the obvious fact that the Saeco bullet is .010 too long and is this enough to cause significant imbalance? Thanks Gp

My .35/.30-30 is a 16” twist and stabilizes Accurate 36-245D and LBT 361-250FN subsonic with 8-9 grains of Bullseye.  I use the same plain-based bullets for hunting with a nominal case full, about 30 grains of either 4064, RL15, 4895 or Varget.   I've found the slower twist more forgiving for higher velocities with plain based bullets without leading issues.  Accurate has a 300-grain plainbase for the .358 Win. which my Andy buddy in Oregon says is stable subsonic when fired from his Browning BLR with 12” twist.  He had the nose truncated on his mold to 1.16” OAL which provides a .255 meplat.

Having both the RCBS and SAECO molds, you are off to the best start. Owning a .357 Herrett barrel for my T/C Contender and several friends with .35 Remington rifles, there is the occasional day-long casting session with these molds.

  • One friend lives in Florida and says the SAECO bullet is perfect for alligators
  • It permanently tames them on the spot, sometimes with one shot.
  • The other friend lives in Idaho, uses the RCBS bullet on deer and elk.
  • Again, it is a stopper in the .35 Remington.
  • Both bullets shoot well on paper, but I've never hunted with either bullet. 

I have shot heavier bullets in .35 caliber, but with mixed results.These are the best compromise for recoil, wind drift, accuracy,trajectory, and usefulness. I would shoot these bullets for a start, with the 1 in 16” twist, and look at the accuracy results.
