Since Midsouth has extended the line of Shooters World Powders and at $19.50 for a one pound canisters and 8 pounders at $150.00 they are very tempting to try, anyone had any experience with them?

For mainland US consumers buying cheap imported powders regardless of how good they are can be a double edged sword.  You don't want to hang the local industry and then have the imports fall over.  Low risk I know but worth considering.  That said a lot of Hodgdon powder is ex Australia so............

Thanks Ken. While I respect what Jeff is saying and I don't want him to wallop he on the head when I see him, I don't think SW powders are going to put any domestic powder company in jeopardy. I plan to order a variety of their powders in 1 pounders to try them out, before investing in larger quantities. I am glad to see someone is using them. I first say the ad for them about 1 to 1.5 years ago, but at that time it was only a powder or two.

I have used Clean Shot as a replacement for Red Dot in shotshells. It did fine no problems. I can't say for sure but I have read that Explosia makes Lovex and Accurate powders.

I don't have any sympathy for our domestic (if you can call them domestic) powder suppliers.

Hodgdon got to the top on surplus powders (they were very good in those days) by under-cutting Dupont and Olin. Hodgdon now owns the all the rights to them now. They almost have a monoploy on US powders now and rather than keep their prices low as in their early days, they choose to increase them with the current political and corporate environment!!!! I say SHAME ON THEM!!! Their production cost are not in line with their pricing. They got where they are by suppling low cost powders to the reloader, they have abanded that policy.

I loved AA powders when I first found them in '85. 2lb for the same price as most of the rest and they made plenty of money! I still use #9 and haven't found a better powder for my applications but, they are following the same political and corprate trend. If I can find a good sourse of D037.2, I will diffidently tried it.

At $20 per lb, they are making very good profits, that's what most of the powders that I've used, where selling for 3-4 years ago, before Obama and the shootings. Their (domestic powder co.) cost haven't gone up 50% in that time but, their greed has.

Same story on primers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I won't get started on that though!

Done with my rant.

Frank

And it is the near monopoly of Hodgdon that Frank mentions that is for sure a problem.  Tricky old situation really.

You think you've got it tough in the US.  Here in NZ the price of ADI branded powder from Australia is the same as the price of the ADI manufactured Hodgdon powder that has shipped from AU to US and back to NZ.  Now you explain that to me.

Did a little research and found that these powders are made in the Czech republic. One member send me a pm saying these powders were made in China and that he would not buy them because of that. This is how rumors get started like the one that PayPal is anti gun, which is not true.

I hope SW powder stays around. However I have not bought any yet. I find their data pretty thin and info pretty vague. It takes some time to get new data put together.

I won't BS, I will just come out and say it. I am a Hodgdon junkie. Hey there from my home area what can I say. My dad and Bruce were friends. But, the thoughts of a monopoly I kinda sorta agree with. We don't know the whole inside scoop either. Hodgdon has put a lot on our plate over the years, we have to keep that in mind. The past excuse for a president cost us as shooters a lot. So did H pick up the ball when the parent company was going to cut back or throw in the towel for powder to reloaders? I don't know and doubt we will ever know. A lot of folks forget that there was only one company that made anything specific for us as reloaders CCI. Correct me if I am wrong. Bullets brass and powder was always surplus and over runs of production going to the masses as complete loaded ammo. Years past we could say we saved by reloading. Go to your favorite local GS, price a box of ammo, then break it down into components. I did just that last week at cabelas. I bought loaded Hornady Superformance 22 hornet ammo cheaper than I could buy Hornady brass, by $5 per 50. 204 Ruger ammo was less than the price of a bullet apart from brass. Dunno what to say, other than I am lost in the 80's like other folks. Jeff
