What's it worth

My local hobby shop has a S&W 625 5" that I believe was made in 1988.  It has the firing pin on the hammer.  It's used of course and appears in excellent condition.  He wants about  $650 for it.

Sometime back I believe Smith made some of these where the cylinder throats were considerably larger than the bore and would not shoot lead.  Is this about the time frame of this revolver?

$650 is a very fair price for a 625. But you did not say if it was a 625-2, 3 etc.

The 1989 model's shoot very well with cast bullets.

These all had .452" throats (but long chambers) and shoot well. Earlier ones vary greatly, take a plug gauge with you. Price is very fair for my area of the US.

Buy it, they go for over 700 around here but are not common. Throats run .451 - 452 but as Rick says take a .451 jacketed bullet with you.

The chamber ledge will probably be sharp. I have had them cut a nice circle of jacket material from jacketed bullets and leave it in the chamber. This does accuracy no good and will hurt cast bullets too!

If you have this problem, see Ed Harris's method of using a 30.06 case and grinding compound to smooth down the chamber ledge. I had a reamer made to cut the chamber ledge to a regular revolver chamber. It can be used to partially remove the ledge. Reaming has improved the  accuracy with each of my 45 ACP revolvers. We can work out a loan of the reamer.

This is probably the best of the 45 revolvers. The 45 ACP is superb, plentiful brass, excellent ballistics, adequate power for 99% of shooting. Moon clips get you the fastest reload in any revolver, or you can use 45 Auto-Rim cases.

I got one of these when they came out. One of the best shooting guns I ever let slip through my fingers. Good Price, buy it.

I bought a 625-3 4" Model of 1989 five years ago for $600.00 and was happy to pay that.  It has a tight cylinder which requires deeper seating of the 200gr. H&G 68 SWC along with a .451" sizing diameter.

Flat out shoots.  Used it for my NRA Pistol Instructor class's range qualification, only one with a revolver.

Buy it, no MIM, no Lock, no Brainer.

I have a 5" Model 625-6 and a 4" 625-8 JM Special. They are two of the most satisfying handguns I have ever owned. Either will, on demand, shoot under 1" groups at 25 yards. I have put probably 15,000 rounds through the pair of them. The only loads I have shot in my guns is my home cast bullets. I mostly shoot a Mihec molded copy of the H&G #69 (a flat based #68) sized at .452" which matches the throat diameters of both revolvers.

Wasn't there an article a couple issue's ago in the FOULING SHOT on 45acp revolvers that had good things to say about the             S & W 625 ?
