a buddy has a 788 with a 18 in. barrel ( 308 ) .   boring.

his total budget is about $80.

the 788 has a 1 in. x 20 pitch thread.  so i think i can crutch a savage 110 takeoff onto the 788.  anybody got a savage takeoff ?  260.6.5, 243, 7-08 ..

or ... i got a nice 7-08 takeoff from a rem . 700 ( 1.06 x 16 thread )  and he likes the 7mm idea.

has anybody tried turning a rem 700 boss down to 1 inch and re-threading ?  there would be 0.020 deep remnants after turning down.  i am thinking ugly but cheap ...  i would have to turn off the 700 bolt recess so should pick up 1 good new thread.

any comments ( however abusive ) would be appreciated.  i am volunteering my time ( 8 hrs? ) ,  heck it's a long winter,

ken

I have a 788 that plan to re-barrel. My research has led me to believe that a 700 shank will have a shadow of the old threads after turning down. This did not seem to hurt anything. My action was a 22-250 and I think I'm still looking for a .25 barrel for it.

oh oh, there seems to be some misinformation re: savage 110 barrel threads. the small boss has 1.055 dia., not 1.00 ... 1.055 is about what rem 700 threads are cut at to get sturdy flat top thread form. clear screen y reset project. ( g ) .

thanks for replies, ken

I'm in the process of building a 308 out of a 243, 700 rem SA action. So, will end up with a spare 243, 22” barrel, trigger set, and stock. My budget is a bit more then $80. Might sell or trade any and all parts.

Thanks Rich L:D

Ken - I just (yesterday) handed my 'smith a Martini Cadet barreled action (.30-30) and a rem 700 7mm Rem Mag takeoff barrel to be fitted and re-chambered to 7mm International Rimmed.

His comment was that it would be OK because he could cut off the chamber area of the old barrel. Otherwise it would be difficult indicating it in where it should be - i.e. from the center of the bore.

FWIW.

ken The Savage guys buy the rifle and re-barrel it to what they want and sell the original barrel.. A 308 is common, can be easily re-barreled to 243, 257, 7-08, 30-06, 35 Whelen, ???. With common bolt heads, the whole cartridge family is available.. Change bolt heads and have another family of cartridges.  223 bolt head for whisper, 222, 222 M, ?? Changing barrels is so easy that even I can do it. Prefit barrels available from Shilen, McGowen, Pac Nor, Criterion, etc. I just bought a 25-06 barrel, 22” sporter, for $60 delivered. I can play with this, make a light carbine, shoot it for a while with cast bullets and sell it for $50 when I'm done. The only thing missing with Savage re-barreling is the three year wait for the gunsmith/wizard to do 90 minutes of work.

Here are 2 7-08 barrels Let me know. I have two take offs, both from Axis rifles, brand new and never fired. They are both 20 inches, and matte blued. One has a scratch from when I removed it from the action (vise pad slipped), but the other is perfect. The scratch has been touched up, but it's still visible.Looking for $65 shipped for the perfect one, and $55 shipped for the one with the scratch.Let me know if you're interested.
