Does anyone have experience with shooting cast bullets in the 222 Rem.  I would like to have a centerfire cast bullet small game rifle.  Initially I was looking at larger calibers but the availablility of an accurate rifle can be a problem in many of the 25 to 32 caliber cartridges.  I would like to reach 1600 to 1800 fps with at least 2 moa accuracy.  Is it possible or is it so easy that I shouldn't even be concerned?

There is a fellow, Paul Pollard from Ohio that frequents this forum. I know he shoots one.

Lefty,  I have a love-hate relationship with 22 CF using cast bullets but I can pass on some of the loads that I did have success with in the Triple Deuce.   My rifle is a Sav.110 with a varmint barrel on it, so for what it's worth, here are my recipes

Ly 225462    WW   water quenched    17 to 19 Grs    IMR 4350

"   225646       “         “          “            13.5 to  15.5 Grs    IMR3031

"        “   “         “          “          “          19 Grs      H 4831

The 4831 prioduced the best group  7 shots 1.5"  @ 100yds

I hope this helps,  keep us posted.   Now its back to Hornet and that 38 Gr. PB mold.!!

The RCBS 22-55 sp is about .660” long and usually would not stabilize in the 14” twist at under 1860 fps. I have an older Lyman 22415 single cavity which is .550” long and it seems to shoot ok slowly. This one is 45 gr of linotype. Powder, maybe 4227 for the slower speeds. 10.5 H4227 would give 2100 fps with the 55 gr.

Now, before you go poo-pooing Lee moulds, this 22 design is a dandy.

Agree with Sundog on the 22Bator.  Casts easily, shoots well in 222/223 and one of these days will try it in 22-250.  Kind of an ugly blunt gc, but looks arn't every thing when it comes to performance.  No problem by the way with my 2 Cav. Lee and this blt.

Dear fellow lefty,

Before I got onto the kick of shooting long bullets in fast twists 223 such as the Savage I had good luck with Lyman's 225415 or 225462 cast of either wheelweight metal or linotype. Ahead of 6 or 7 grains of 2400 or 4759 these loads would average about 1.5 MOA from a 1960 vintage L-46 Sako. This was the type with 12 very shallow grooves, similar to Marlin's microgroove - the kind of bore the conventional wisdom says is no good for cast bullets.

This made an excellent squirrel combination for out to 50 yards which was as far as I could reliably hit a squirrel's head anyway.

By the way pay attention to Paul Pollard. He just placed second in the the unrestricted class for the 200 yard score match in the CBA nationals completed two weeks ago. So much for 22's not being able to compete with 30 calibers at 200 yards.

Rikkit,  Tried your load of 19 gr. of H4831 under 225646 at .225, with LLA.  5 shots at 50 yds. shot well under an inch, but I noticed that I was getting some unburned powder.  Had 4 left, so ran a clean patch through the bore, and shot at 100 and for the 4 shots got right at 1 1/2".  Then, tried one of the Lee Bator blts. with same charge and w/LLA, that weigh right about 51gr. checked and lubed, and got about 2” for five rounds at 100, but more unburned powder than I was getting from the 223646.  All rounds crimped w/Lee factory crimper.

My question is:  What primer are you using?

Second question:  If you are using a std. primer, am wondering if you have tried that load with a mag primer?

I have shot the Deuce quite a bit with RCBS 22-055-FN, sized .225", heat treated, and loaded over 22.5 BLC-2. I got 2680 ft/sec and 1.2 MOA when I did things right.~Andy

Today we are answering the same question for a guy that is having grouping problems with his 225415 loads. This seems like a loading Thread so here is my take. I don't feel you will attain MOA at 100 for say 10 group aggs with 22 Cast using a factory rifle. I always shot 10 group aggs when shooting .222 cast loads.  But 2” MOA was attainable for me with my 722 in .222 Rem. I could also do the same with 225462.

This was difficult for me because both ranges I shot were shooting over a canyon. No place for windflags and wood benches. I had my best results with Unique, 4995, 4198, and 748.

Never cast the RCBS 22-055- FN but it looks good.

Hi there all. have shot Lyman 225415 for years as a rabbit load. Used to use 8.0 gr. of ww 630 and would get consistant 1.5 moa @ about 1950 f/s. ww630 nla, now use 4759 almost as good. bullets have to be cast hard even lino not too hard. Thats ok at this speed you don,t want expansion if you want to eat that bunnie. Note: these bullets ricochet badly be sure of your back stop!
