any eye deers ???

so far Accurate Arms is the only published loading data I've found... although I found a list of receipes for 170 grain bullets, but only a list of powders & “safe” charge ranges, no velocities or ???

Mag Wheel, we need some more info.  Are you shooting plain base single shot, gas check in a repeater, etc?  What level of performance are you looking for?

I shoot 13.0 surp 4759 in my single shot with a PB 200 grainer at 200 yards.

A lever gun with a GC for deer hunting might be a whole lot different.

Sorry...

I'm in love with the old girl... so no trouble talking about her...

I just bought a #1 Remington Rolling Block that was likely customzed in the 30's or 40's, as a bench rest gun... it has incredible furniture... a fat beaver tail fore arm, & high cheek rollover stock... it's currently barreled in a relitively short 23.5” heavy round barrel chambered in 225 Winchester... the action is tight, some of the #1's components look to have been changed out with smokeless parts, but the barrel is just about shot out...

... so I'm rebarreling it with a Shilen 8mm match barrel with a 1 in  10” twist ( unfinished )... I'll contour it to match the custom 1.25” 225 Winchester barrel, so the glass bedded fore arm still fits ), chambering it in 32-40...I want to keep the barrel as long as possible, probably a trimmed out length of 26” - 27"

the stock is figured for scope use, so I'll be setting up the gun with a Leatherwood Malcolm style external adjust scope... probably a 6X & fitting a Vernier style rear scope base, as my goal for the gun is MOA at 100, 200, & 300 yards ( distances I shoot regularly on my personal range )

I plan on chambering the gun for seated bullets ( rather than breech seating ) with as long a cartridge OAL as practical, & using 200 to 200 + grain bullets... I guess I plan on starting with jacketed bullets, as I haven't reloaded for several years, & it'll be a big enough job getting everything set up for loading this winter, without casting my own... I have all the tools for casting, so I plan on doing a 200-220 grain gas check spire point bullet ( maybe next year )

... I got my 1st 150 new WW 32-40 cases in this week... I may reform 30-30 cases later, but at least to start with, I thought I'd get “some” correct head stamp cases...

so... any favorite receipes for 200 - 220 grain bullets in a single shot ???

my rifle as it sits right now...

In a strong rifle with ten-inch twist you should be able to load a nominal “caseful"  of  a medium-to-slow burner such as 4064, RL15 or Varget with a 200-gr. GC bullet for about 1700-1800 fps using 12-15BHN alloy.  I used 36 grs. of 4064 in a .30-30 with 200-gr. NEI bullet seated out in long Ardito-style throat with only the GC set in the case mouth and the bullet jammed in the rifoling.  The .32-40 case has more taper and holds less powder, probably no more than 28-30 grs. to the base of the bullet.

ED...Thanks for the tip... I only found reference to RL-15 so far, of the powders you mentioned... with charges from 20 - 23 grains...

so  I added the 4064 to my list... any eye deer on Varget charges ???

WOW... thanks...

Ideally I'd still like some with heavier bullets, but I think I'll condense your post a little & copy it to a word document, & save it, it'll give me a good reference pont

I saw your post on TFL heres a little more.

Cast bullets that were sized to .323 inch were poured from 1-20 alloy. Those sized .321 inch were poured of Lyman No. 2 alloy. Both sizes were lubed with SPG and fitted with Lyman gas checks. Brass for cast bullets was new manufacture Winchester. For jacketed bullets it was nickel-plated brass from John Wayne commemorative factory loads. Primers were CCI standard Large Rifle primers. Groups were shot at 100 yards from a sandbag rest and chronographing was done with an Oehler Model 35P with start screen at approximately 6 feet. (Handloader Issue #245 - February-March, 2007)

JK... thanks for all those load receipes ( both forums )... ( that kept me busy for a while anyways )... if you run across any with the heavier Schuetzen style bullets, or anything at or around 200 grains... let me know... thanks again...

13.5 to 14.5 gr of 4227   Won and/or placed in so many lead bullet matches that it isn't funny.  165 to 200 gr bullets.   14 gr with a 200 gr bullet is a common “match load"  This old girl is shot at so many ASSRA matches......Usually takes a 14” twist for the 200gr and heavier......16” twist can make do with 185gr and lighter bullets.

would suggest you try the ASSRA forum   many of us shoot 32.40s  I regularly shoot

207gr 321 dia from Hoch mold with about 13.5gr of h-108  we get some pretty good groups at 200 yds

thanks for the info... I do post over there as well...

my rifle is coming together way faster than I had hoped, & I have some starting reciepes for my jacketed bullet load...

I've gotten several suggestions about cast bullets... “I think” I'm wanting something long enough to engage the rifling on my deeper throated chamber, & the bullet will need to be .325” or so ( my barrel is a 1 in 10 twist 8mm barrel, chambered to 32-40 with the throat opened so the brass will side in with an 8mm bullet seated )

I've heard I could send in one of my jacketed bullets & have a matching mold cut??? is this a recommended practice ??? I think I just need the olgive to contact the rifling similarly ???

sorry for all the corn fusion concerning cast bullets, but I inherited a lot of casting gear, & have a local mentor in casting, but no personl expirience with it yet... thought I'd include a pic of my gun... the stock is yet unfinished, as is the metal... the adjustable steel butt plate still needs finish shaping... but it's coming along... what do you think ???
