It is a slow day here today. Perhaps I can get some input. I am considering returning to the 308 Win for at least a few matches this summer. It has been several (3-4) years since I last cast 30 caliber bullets so my supply is low. Assume a 12" twist barrel for your recommendation. The bullet will need to perform well at 200 yards. Beyond that is not important to me.

Here are the molds I have on hand which seem appropriate but I can always buy one more if need be.

Lyman 311299, RCBS 180 SP, Saeco 315, Accurate 31-200 G, Accurate 31-200 NR, NOE 310 165 FN (30 XCB), NOE 310 167 FN (ELCO), NOE 312 160 FN (Harris - 7.62x39 I believe).

Yes I have some old biases but I also have brand new molds among this group. I will deal with fit once I settle on 2-3 designs.

100 & 200 yd. slighter targets fired at  the Hawkeye rifle and Pistol club, Same match. One after the other. K-98 Mauser 7.62x 51mm, 13" twist, RCBS 30-180-SP 17.5 grains IMR 4227.  Record targets not notable. Not on ;your list but I mostly load the RCBS 308-165-SIL. Had to lap that one to fit the Mauser. Weighs now at about 175 grains. One GG and suits the short neck .308 and Mauser throat better, with just the GC below the inside of the neck. Both shoot equally well. More 100 yd. targets but all I have at both 100&200. Representative of the capability of that Mauser with these bullets. I think that the 180 might have the nod at 200 over the 165 though.

If you are going to be shooting with any chance of wind being an issue, 200, then 180, then 165. The reason is wind drift. I have a hard time getting 165/173 cast bullets to shoot accurately fast enough at 200 yards to reduce wind drift advantage of the heavier bullets. The RCBS 180 has been a good bullet for me in commercial rifle  barrels, but the 311299 does better in the 1/10 military barrels I have used. FWIW, Ric

...hmmmm ... bullet A is slightly more accurate in zero wind  ... say 1.5 moa vs bullet B at 2.2 moa ....

but a 10 mph wind blows bullet A 4 inches further off at 200 yards ....

but is that wind really 10 mph ( 4 inches more drift ) or is it 14 mph ( 6 in more drift ) ... or 8 to 16 mph switching ??  ( ?? left, maybe ?? right .. drift )

in case of panic, sometimes its best to just aim at the damn bullseye ... heh

dang that sounds like fun ... i gotta get back into some shootin' matches ...

my first choice would be the  311299 . Nice short body for the short neck of the 308

I, too, have mostly used the 311299 in 1in10 military barrels. The RCBS 180 SP is a good bullet. I have shot a whole bunch of them over the years. I have never really given the RCBS 165 a fair try. The two NOE spitzers are interesting. Lighter weight and better ballistics ; they both seem to be well regarded.

I have never tried an Eagan design.

I used to have the 311332 mold but I may have purged it last summer. I had better check today. Jim
