I was wanting a load for the 500gr Lee g/c bullet ( C457-500-f-45-70) I was thinking about 12gr of Unique  with out a g/c as a start load and work up to 17gr and see what the accuracy was like?....and for full power loads with a gas check what would be your fav. load?

also is there a COW load for this or the 405gr bullet as I would like to take up some of the room in the case and also would not mind geting a little bore cleaning as I shoot?

Thanks so much for your time Jonathan

Hello,

I use the old Lyman 500 grain Govt round nose bullet with either 2400 or 4198 powders. I shoot them mostly in trapdoors and a rechambered Danish Rolling Block but also in a Shiloh Sharps Business rifle.

 Good luck,

  Docbob

I like 2400 also for light loads. Unique is too quick for my tastes but I'm sure it's doable. Ed would probably use Red Dot and not look back. Just be very carefull to avoid double loads. For full power, I use 5744 now, but I'm duplicating BP loads. For truly full power, IMR3031 and AA2495 are my choices especially with the heavy bullets. They kick like a mule, even in a 10# rifle, so be aware.

I have some H4198 on hand and the 500gr pills are gas checked ...would you mind sharing some load info?

Thanks Jonathan

We have a lot of agreement here. Don't believe some of the charges recommended for 2400; stay on the light side. With a 405 grain bullet, 20 grains of Alliant 2400 will give up to 1400 fps. Play safe with 500 grains. With IMR 3031, 38 grains is a good load and will give you at least 1330 fps and some nerve and joint damage in a light rifle.

For the 405 gr bullet I use 38 gr of 3031. For the 500 gr I use 31 4198. I shoot both the trap door and the rolling block. Sure death on one end and a severe beating on the other.

If it is not too late I'll chime in, I shoot a 500 gr. Lyman boolit with 27 gr.s of 5744 in both my Rolling Block and Sharps Rifle with very good accuracy. As a matter of fact that is all I shoot in them now.

I'm kinda partial to H322 !

I use that with the Ranch Dog 460-425GC , the BRP 462-465GC and the BallistiCast 462-550GC .

I use 44.5 grains of H322 with the BRP 462-465GC and use 39 grains of H322 with the BallistiCast 462-550GC .

So if I had a 500 grainer that would cycle thru my 1895 I think I'd start with 39 grains of H322 and go up in 1 grain increments not to excede 42.5 grains !

You could also give consideration to IMR8208 as I am getting similar results with this powder to what I get with H322 at the same charge weights . Although I can generally go approx one grain more with IMR8208 .

And as it is alwasy a good idea to say , this works in my rifle . So if you try in your own back off a good bit and work your way up SLOWLY !
