A better iron rear sight for H&R Handi Rifle

Until recently I had been using the XS Systems ghost ring peep sights on all my lever-action and most single-shot hunting rifles.  The rear sight only for the Marlin 1894 costs about $60. Variations are available to fit most popular rifles, but not the H&R Handi Rifle:

http://item.brownells.com/primary/xs-sight-systems-rifle-parts/index.htm>http://item.brownells.com/primary/xs-sight-systems-rifle-parts/index.htm

Typical XS peep and front sights are shown below.  There is no easy peep sight solution for the H&R Handi Rifles without machining the breech which is necessary to lower the rear sight on the large barrel breech diameter.  Otherwise you need a higher front sight than is commonly available, unless you are content with the expensive and very high Lyman 17 globe sights.  I had addressed this problem in the past by maching the breech of the H&R barrel flat and installing a rear sight intended for the Marlin 1894.

Most recently I changed to a Kensight reproduction of the M1 Carbine rear sight, which costs only $25 from Brownells: http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=27166/Product/M1-CARBINE-REAR-APERTURE-SIGHT>http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=27166/Product/M1-CARBINE-REAR-APERTURE-SIGHT The savings in purchasing the Kensight equals the cost to machine the barrel. Total cost to machine the barrel, providing and install the M1 carbine sight is about the same as buying the XS peep alone. AND it provides an easily hand-adjustable sight which zeroes with factory .30-30 loads at 50 yards with the rear sight bottomed when using the factory front sight!  The Kensight is rugged and has a good range of repeatable windage and elevation adjustments, enabling you to return to a known sight setting for various loads. The XS peep requires that you to pick one load, zero and then you have essentially a fixed peep unless you want to modify sight picture or rezero again.

Hello Ed,

I had considered a peep for my NEF Ultra in .500 S&W. Here is what I was looking at:

OR Marble #30 base and blade peep:

I had hoped these would have worked with the factory front sight. Am I really wrong about that? The Marble is about $25 for the base available for several barrel sizes and $8 for the blade with a choice of peep sizes, smallest pictured.

Don't know about the Skinner sight, but with Williams you need a higher front sight unless you machine the barrel to lower the sight.

The NEF peep is a recent addition to the Skinner sight product line and claims full windage/elevation adjustment. Standard peep is a .096 aperture but .040 , .070 , .125 and .155” are available. A brass dovetail aperture and stem are a $20 option for the skinner sight also:

If you want a “set and forget” sight for one load, that one seems to be a viable option.

have been talking to everone about my H&R BC. I have found that the front sight is to tall. And the rear sight is not the best in the world. I found a 1901 Krag rear sight. The bolt holes are very close. I am going to post some pics. Please let know what uall thing about it.

The Krag sight is flashy and looks great. Unless the mounting is rock solid and the mechanism has zero wobble, it won't be an improvement. Many of the Krag sights have quite a jiggle to them from age and wear. You know what you have better than we do without feeling it.

I was very lucky with this sight it is rock tight. I made sure that mounting was rock solid. I went shooting Sat and it did not looseing up any. I had to cut the base to fit the barrel and redrill the rear screw hole around 1/16 larger to fit the holes in the barrel. I have to get a lower front sight the sight that comes with the H&R BC are .584 and the needed sight should be .404. But I am very happy with the rifle. I is dead on at 200yds with 70grns of 2F blackpowder and a 500grns lead cast. Thanks

Aren't those threaded post rear sights fairly coarse for elevation setting? A half turn must be quite an adjustment.

32 pitch thread @ 1/2 revolution with 24 inch sigbt radius is about 2 minutes.

Thanks Ed, that is a lot coarser than I'm used to.

I took a closer look at your M1 sight. Did you machine the barrel for the for the dovetail on the sight base? I've got a Hornet and there sure is lots of beef on my Handi barrel. I have a WGRS on a 10-22. It is a dandy set and hopefully forget sight in my opinion as well.

Yes, I had John Taylor machine the barrel to take the M1 carbine sight.

Lots of stock there to work with. Works well.

You might want to try a Lyman #48 sight. It takes a little fooling and filing, but works great. I picked up mine at a gun show. Reg

Lots of sound advice here.

Reg, does your rifle wander at all with the sight seperate from the break barrel? That is an interesting lay-out.

The hinge pin fit is very tight, no wondering and shoots great, I am at almost 800 rounds.  I dropped the canvas carrying bag and knocked the front sight loose, which was the only trouble and an easy fix by tightening the dovetail lips. Reg

How tall is that front sight?

Factory front sight I use with my M1 Carbine sight conversion is .495", THAT one is almost twice as high!

I think it was .480” then welded onto dovetail blank to get height that I wanted. Reg
