BIPODS

My Ruger Charger came with a bipod. I've never shot with a bipod, so I left it in the box, until Wednesday. I am now in love. This morning I bought 2 pounds of rice and put it in a shot bag for a rear bag, and put the bipod on the M10 pistol. Bipod and rice/shot bag, no hauling rests around.

I'm looking for comment on bipods from experienced users.

Thanks;

joe b.

Joe,

This may or may not be helpful to you.

Do you plan to shoot in CBA bench rest matches with the modified Savage? If no than your experimenting is just fine, have fun and enjoy it.

The subject of the type or rear bag being used at matches is interesting. If your gun makes weight and barrel length for the LRH category, then the rear bag, in the spirit of intent of other CBA gun categories, should be a plyable type of sand bag. If you are overweight (over 7- pounds) or the barrel is too long (15" max.) you would be in UNP category where the use of rear and front rest design, including a bi-pod, is not regulated.

I have no experience with bi-pods, can't help there.

Have you considered what the ATF thinks about converting a rifle to a pistol? At one time this was a no-no but maybe the rules have changed!

Keep having fun!

Tom

I got a quick impromptu lesson from an Army member at a range once on bipods.

Mainly on loading the bipod with pressure. See if you can clamp a small board to the bench directly under the bipod and either hook the legs and pull the weapon back firmly to tension the bipod or set the legs against the board and push tension the bipod. See which way shoots better for you.

From the little I know about bipods, the more quality (expensive) they are, the less they rock under recoil.

Like x101, my only experience with bipods is with the M14 rifle and the little clamp on one, and the M60 MG. If you try pulling back and the gun has much recoil, it will start sliding back. If you push forward, it will rock back, but your body weight may return it to original position. So folks learn to shot really really well with a bipod, and other not so much, like me.

Avoid Chinese products unless you don't mind replacing them in a year or so.

Harris is a name you can count on.

Caldwell is good enough.

QD stud shanks take all the brunt of  the heavy hitting caliber's recoil and often bend after a long session.

30 Herrett pistol

7-30 waters w target

I shoot, therefore I am

No, my bullet casting days are over. Just experimenting now.

The ATFE rules require a minimum 16" barrel and 26" overall length on a legal rifle, so it would be in UNP

The Specialty Pistols forum stopped the rifle to pistol talk long ago. The opinions about legality differ, but ATFE won't respond to questions. I have written and e-mailed the DC and Tampa FL offices, with zero response. The ATFE rules that a "short barrel rifle" has a barrel < 16" and/or overall length < 26". The Contender produced an amazing decision a few years back. I figure I've made a reasonable effort to be legal.

Keep having fun!

Tom

Thanks, Tom

Regarding rifle to pistol, opinions about legality differ, and ATFE won't respond to questions, one has to think about how much money one is willing to spend, and how much time you're willing to spend in the county jail and / or state and / or federal prison proving your opinion is right.

In March or 2018 near St Paul, Minnesota, there was a raid where the Ramsey Co Sheriffs seized dozens of firearms including a "machine gun and short-barreled shotgun", after a 13-year-old autistic boy made a comment in school about shooting class mates.  The kids father was charged with felony improper storage and possession of illegal firearms.

Four months later, at a press conference Sheriff Serier     "providing alarming photos of a tangle of rifles dumped on a mattress."     It's very interesting that it took "Four months later, the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension concluded that what was originally thought to be a machine gun was actually a semi-automatic rifle, and a short-barreled shotgun was a pistol that fired bullets, not shells. The sheriff hadn’t bothered to confirm."

It's also interesting to hear that the there was no followup in the main stream press that the firearms were not restricted, but only in the alternative press, and then as part of an investigation of improprieties in the Sheriff's department.

I wonder if the father ever got his firearms back and how much damage they suffered when they were "dumped" on the mattress.

Also, like the IRS, if ATFE in one region sends you a opinion letter, that doesn't mean another region has to agree with it.

Just throwing in a touch of reality.
