Bullet lube choice

Review of CBA match equipment lists shows little to no agreement on bullet lubes, mirroring my experience and test results. No matter how bad it smells as you mix it in a pan on the stove; no matter how infuriated your wife becomes; no matter how much you pay-to-whom, for their secret recipe;  reasonable bullet lubes deliver the same accuracy.

Threshold: Any lube listed in CBA match results by persons finishing anything but last.

Agreed and a few more that ASSRA/ISSA shooters use.

Bullet lube matters a great deal, a very great deal, but where that really shows up is at extremes of temperature and at velocities exceeding 2000 fps.

The problem with this assumption is that the CBA list of equipment encompasses all cast bullet shooting.  It does not.  There are instances, especially at higher velocities, where some lubes work, some don't and a few work exceptionally well.  I concur with Geargnasher.

Further, you don't get to burn thee foulers on a sighter target to get everything warmed up and printing well before popping a Blacktail on a cold, wet December morning.

Discounting cold-barrel warmup shots from scoring targets removes one very important lube criterion from evaluation when considering CBA data as a source. Frequent bore cleaning habits of most competitors is another factor that renders their lube choice fairly meaningless for general consideration.

Once again, every rifle is a law unto itself, different lubes have different applications; eg. the old Lyman black graphite, wax lube worked pretty well in low velocity rifle, and most pistol loads.  It fails miserably when velocity approaches 2000fps Javelina lube works a lot better.  Find what works for you in your rifle with your load and quit worrying about all the rest.  CBA match results is a very good place to start.

I've used LBT Blue Soft in a 6.5 PPC shooting a 170 gr self cut bullet at 1750 fps. A 30 BR shooting a variety of different RCBS and LBT SP bullets around the 2200 fps mark. A 30 PPC shooting a 250 gr Dave Mos bullet at 1700 fps. And a 30x47 shooting a 160 gr LBT at 2600 fps when I was active in CBA benchrest. Might have been others I tried but can't remember. I can't speak for all the other lubes out there but with LBT less was better. One lube groove filled was all I used and most if not all of my custom molds were made that way. I can't speak for every available lube out there but there's a chance its more the amount being used than the lube itself when people are saying something doesn't work. This only applies to the better lubes being used.

I have to point out the error in assumptions some are making on this forum and point out a simple fact when it comes to the match program. The military matches don't apply here. Ill be as diplomatic as possible. Not every match shooter is cleaning all the time. I've been to matches from coast to coast and while I never took a poll I know some people didn't clean at all or cleaned at the end of the day most likely more out of habit than anything else. Not all match shooters are using pistol powders or shooting 1600 fps. In fact except for the PB class I think pistol powders are kinda rare if used at all. Now for the idea that CBA isn't the only shooting going on out there. Of course it isn't but except for the ASSRA I can't think of another program featuring head to head competition where the scores and groups, along with the equipment lists, are available for public consumption. Sure a few guys might get together now and then and have a little shoot off but that's not the same as having your results measured by people with no dog in the fight. No griping, no alibis, no fibbing. Just hard data. If you know you just shot a record but 2 of the shots went through the exact same hole in the target and the backer guess what you shot four shots on the target and you're out of luck. I was director of registered competition for 5 years and shot from coast to coast so know what I'm saying is true.
