I've been putting together the ingredients to make a batch of ED'S RED. Got the O'REILLYS  ATF, acetone, odorless kerosene, AND NO ODORLESS MINERAL SPIRITS. Turns out that the odorless version is now considered an ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD by gov. nanny brown's liberal bleeding hearts. So how bad will the ED'S RED smell if I use regular mineral spirits ?

GP,

Those damned birds were all trapped back in the 1980's, crossbred with ANDEAN Condors & released over Calif. & of all places the Grand freakin' Canyon.  I even saw a couple of the last real CALIFORNIA CONDORS back in the late '60's when I used to hike in to fly fish Sespe Creek. Back then state biologists used to drag old dairy cows out there & cut their throats so the remaining few birds had a food source. Of course you won't find that fact on wiki-mistakes.

OK, the problem is you don't want water based "mineral spirits". The issue is trying to find any petroleum based solved in CA. Naphtha or Stoddard solvent will work. Another is MEK, if that is legal in CA. HTH, Ric

MEK is nasty stuff.  I used equal parts Kerosene, acetone, ATF and mineral turpentine.  Works great.

I use acetone, kerosine,ATF and pure gum turpentine.

Acetone (methyl methyl ketone) has a maximum permissible airborne concentration of 1000 ppm.

MEK  (methyl ethyl ketone) has a maximum permissible airborne concentration of 200 ppm. The solvent properties are like acetone but it evaporates slower.

Neither one is good for you, but the quantities used in bore cleaning are small, still I prefer to use them outdoors.

Turpentine is another matter the terpenes are more toxic and can cause allergic dermatitis ( you do wear plastic gloves when cleaning guns don't you?)

The smelly components of regular mineral spirits and kerosene are sulfur compounds removing them makes the product "odorless". There is no difference in solvent properties for the odorless variety.

A good replacement are the clean kerosene heater replacement fuels.

K-2 kerosene is the lowest grade, K-1 is the higher grade with less sulfur and acid impurities.

The "environmentally friendly" replacements for solvents are useless.

If you cannot find quality solvents at the big box stores, go to a professional paint store. You may have to buy a gallon and it will be expensive, but you will probably be able to buy the best quality solvents.

I would avoid MEK.When I was in the Army a supply sgt obtained MEK instead of SD-2 for cleaning Cobra weapons after gunnery qualification. The MEK damaged the finish on the aluminum parts of M129 grenade launchers. It's nasty stuff.

I bought some OMS at Home Depot last year. I have not checked lately but Ed Harris substituted OMS for Gum Turpentine which was in the original recipe to lessen its flammability. I'm sure regular MS would work. I have always wondered why it had both Kerosene and OMS, which to me seemed to have similar properties. I would think the Gum Turpentine would be a good ingredient to have. I would stay away from MEK. I worked in a place the used Toluene (Benzine with an -OH group) and I'm sure that it will come back to haunt me.

I remember Sespe Hot Springs from the late 1970's. My buddies and I went there but had to hitch a ride with a jeep guy as my 2WD Toyota P/U was not capable of traversing the Tank Trap hole on the trail in. I am surprised you could fly fish? All I saw was naked T&A, motorcycle gangs and lots of off road partying groups. Ah to be 19 again, I got sunburn in places I did not know I had! Maybe the creek and the HS are in different areas?

Thanks for the memories and I hope you can get your Ed's Red going.

Wiseman,

Sespe Creek was about 6miles above the Hot Springs.  It was a quiet place back then. I went back once when I got outa the Navy. Never got past the Hot Springs. Too damned many drunks & stoner's , sickened me. Even then it was part of the Condor Refuge. The late '60's were a "rainy" time in SoCal back then. But the damned army pukes corpse of concrete pourers screwed up the whole  natural water system.  Killed off all the fish in every SoCal river & Creek.

I guess I'll try some regular mineral spirits. And yes I clean outdoors & have been using gloves for 20+yrs.

When I worked at the furniture factory I was a finisher. We washed our hands with MEK. The stuff would take the dye off of our shoes. When you've had your hands in 5 gallon buckets of walnut stain and it's date night you do what you gotta do.
