Diluting Lee sizing lube

I have diluted this in the past, to use in a spray bottle.  Ed Harris' recent discussion in The Fouling Shot  got me to try it again, this time at one tube to 4 l. It won't dissolve. After shaking it looks like the appropriate skim milk colour, but separates into two layers very soon after - hours, not days. I tried adding some isopropyl alcohol, hoping for some inter-miscibility. No luck.

The tube was a year or so old, but I don't expect wax to age.

Any ideas? I'm just going to go out and buy another tube, but the local large store is out of stock at the moment.

Sounds like a hard water problem.  Try adding a few drops of Dawn or Ivory liquid dishwashing detergent to the mix.

Thanks Ed. I feel like an idiot. I went downstairs to get the jug from where it sat overnight. The top layer is gone except for a bit of foam, the rest looks like skim milk. I'm hoping the rubbing alcohol won't interfere.

I need to look around for my patience!

Should be fine.  Another fellow reading this recommended 3-4 drops of Murphy's Oil Soap to a pint.

That sizing lube is hydrogenated. Mixing water with hydrogenated lubricants causes them to separate, That is just chemistry. The instructions are clear on the container and making up your own instructions is not a new innovation, it is how people give Lee  a bad name by trying to make Lee products something different than they are designed to be..

Ok Gary, now I'm really confused.  Paul shows a tube with a purple colour, mine have red. I diluted my lube based on Ed Harris' article in The Fouling Shot. which reminded me of my past experience.

I've used carbide dies and collet dies exclusively fro several years, but now I need to cobble together some 43 Spanish loads. I was worried about lube dents, and diluted Lee seemed like it was worth a try.

And I will be the first one to badmouth Lee products when I run across one that doesn't seem innovative, or work as expected. Hasn't happened in 20 years, but I reserve my rights.

I have used the Lee sizing lube since it was first marketed. I put some in my palm, rub my hands together then add 10 cases, rub and repeat. To me it is the simplest thing in reloading and the stuff leaves my hands nice. I have no need or sympathy for other methods. Chuckling here, really, I like the stuff as is and have used it on batches as high as 1,000 with no grief or regret. I can easily lube 100/minute and not screw up any of them.
