First post in the new category! I'm famous! Anyway, just wanted to say it was muzzle loaders that got me started casting, around 1985. Still have the molds, and many more now. I hunted exclusively with front stuffers for years, then regressed even more to primitive archery. Got all that stuff too. A man's gotta have a hobby or he'll get in trouble. My favorite hunts were all 'old school', sometimes stalking a particular buck for days out there. I'm considering going back! I know I am happy about this new topic. Good hustle, Dave.
First cherry in a loong time!

My first cast bullet was a round ball for my first real firearm, a flintlock, in 1957 when I was 7 years old. I cast everything for everything I shoot but the flint rifle is my first favorite. My only current flintlock that I posted a kit build along of on this forum:
I have carried this one hunting, no deer with it yet but 2 Black Squirrel head shot massacres at 35 and 40 yards. The rifle spits out a patched round ball or a Lee R.E.A.L. 250 gr. very well.
Well we get a new category and all goes quiet? Thinking about it some the muzzle loaders were the original bullet casters not counting Romans and such that made projectiles out of lead for their slings probably other people too. How cool would it be to add muzzle loading bench matches to CBA matches both round ball and slug guns. There are quite a few of these rifles around with people that own them looking for a place to shoot them which is few and far between in the Mid West. At my home muzzle loading club we are developing some bench matches but it's the same old story of trying to get people to come to the matches and participate. And then I can always be talked into an offhand match or two.

There is a fifty cal round ball 11+ lb Hawken here that I built about 20 yrs ago for that very purpose. The cross stick matches that A ML club near here was hosting. The club folded before I and the rifle had a chance. So it has had very little use since then.
we did have a match on this forum
Pat Iffland was ramrod....then it went away
six of us were greatly disappointed
feel free to start another one..I am sure I can get a few shooting it here
That was all off hand as I recall. I might have some interest in a bench match of some sort, maybe. But only if it was round ball at 100 yds off a rest. This old fart don't hold those danged beasts up so good anymore.
Thinking about it but I already have pretty full shooting schedule BUT if I were to do it it would be a bench rest type of match maybe throw in cross sticks if enough interest. But that is the real problem is to get enough interest and then get some people to actually do it! Been there and done that before.

I shot slug guns back in the late 80's. They have died out, through out the West. If we where to add duplexing the slug gun loads and using one piece cast bullets, it might give a incentive to get them back on the line.
With duplexing, you don't have to wipe between shots (I've shot mine that way) and with the one piece cast bullet, it cuts the bullet making to one fifth the time to make them.
They are labor intensive rifles and that's why I quit shooting them.
rhbrink has hit the nail on the head. We only lack two things someone willing to do a little work and enough shooters with an actual interest strong enough to participate. Participation in this thread isn't promising but who knows.
This is another “good idea” that would be interesting to explore. If someone would run a match on this forum as Pat Iffland did only for benchrest to test interest we might be able to explore further.
If not, it may be fun to talk about muzzleloaders anyway.
