I might try this tomorrow. I've formed cardboard gas checks for my black powder guns with punches and the lub-sizer. I wonder if I can do the same thing with metal screen. I punched 1/2” circles with a hammer and cutter. Then I centered the disc over a .458 die and pushed it through with a fitting nose punch. It might make a good scrubby for the cartridge guns. Would it even be a gas check? A lot of holes in a screen, not checking much gas there.

That is creative, let us know how it works!!!!!

Great thinking out of the box. My opinion is that a copper gas check is more like a structrual reinforcement for the base of a lead bullet. If it really seals the powder gas we should put them on upside down.

I'm also wondering if copper wire could be separated from electric chord and wound into the grease grooves. Maybe use a fly tying vise or a drill to hold a bullets nose?

DsKid' Wire wound bullets were tried way back when and that's one of the interesting subjects on the CDs available from Wolfe publishing. PM me if you would like to down load them and I'll send them along on loan. Gp

I tried the screen gas check idea. It doesn't look good for making .45 checks. The 12” punch is too small and the screen shifts all over the place. I could put them over the card wads that I use but not enough metal will be in contact with the bore to be of use. I'l keep a thinking.

while tinkering with phoo-gas checks ... i have wondered in awe at what/how paper patches really work.
could we make gas checks from copy paper ? in a die set ?
can we mold gas checks from paper-mache ( soggy blended paper pudding ) ? or paper jackets from paper pulp that would stick to the bullet and not fly off at the muzzle unevenly . dipped paper jackets ?
an interesting subject ..

303 Guy posted on the Cast Boolits Forum in the Smokeless Powder Paper Patch section that he did try that. It was a couple of years ago, but as I recall he made a “paper machet” cup into which he placed an appropiate sized lead bullet. He did this in .22 cal center fire (I think it was 22 Hornet). Nor, do I recall his results. I think that he abandoned the project because it was just too fussy in .224 cal. If he is still a member here you could contact him and get better data. Brodie
