Great New ACCURATE Mold

I did some casting with my BRAND NEW ACCURATE MOULD on Monday. A # 45-210J, a 5cav- aluminum.  GEEZ it dropped some great bullets on the first pour.  I was using my RCBS Pro-Melt with the N.O.E. mould guide. I compared the ACCURATE Mould block to my N.O.E .432-240-RF Mould block. Exact same size. I warmed it up and started casting with the 2 moulds. Refilled the pot twice.

1262 keepers, 517 of the .44-240's & 745 of the new .45-210's. It seemed as though the ACCURATE Mould was broken in from the start. Rejection rate was a bit less with the wider, "shallower" .45 mould. 

It was one of the smoothest casting sessions I've had in a long while. I've always cast with the sprue plate "striking tab" to the rear. Just the way I was taught. But the "tab" on the ACCURATE mould is kinda small. So I think next time I use these two moulds, I'll fit the handles with the sprue plate tab in the front of both these moulds. Probably end up being more consistent that way.

How due the rest of you guys position your sprue plates?

I cast with the tab to the front, and have never found a problem doing it that way.  Being more or less self taught, there is no one to blame for this but me.

Winchester, BGI, Pope and others had the tab in front, as does todays Hoch. They are all single cavity moulds. For me, if the tab of a Lyman multi-cavity is in the front, the plate hits my hand every time. Not fun at all.

The only time the sprue plate hits my hand is when I use the mould without handles. 

That's why I use handles on all my moulds these days. The LYMAN 4cav has that bend up at the back of the sprue plate. Makes whacking the sprue plate easy when the sprue plate tab is pointed to the rear, half opposite of a 1 or 2cav mold (except the crappy Lee 2cav). 

The N.O.E. sprue plate tab is straight, but still big/long enough to strike from the rear. The ACCURATE sprue plate tab is much smaller. I tried it mounted to the rear, but I seemed to smack the handles half the time. So I turned the mould around in the handles. Worked better. It just seems to make more sense to have the tabs both face the same way.  

I sized & lubed 100 of those new 45-210 RF .452, used ACCURATE'S flat nose punch, worked great. White Label Lube BAC, It was what was in the old LYMAN Lube-Sizer. Sized easy.

I just Can't quite get used to TL yet. 

Loaded  a box each of .45ACP & of .45S&W. Going to the Pistol Range on Thursday. Bringing my COLT 1911 & RUGER Blackhawk Conv. That should cover all bases.

REALLY looking forward to shooting those BEAUTFULL Bullets.

I think I've really mastered the art of the 4-6 cavity Aluminum mould.

Sorry, I am not man enough to use a mould without handles on it. IT is just too hot. Since my hands and elbows are bad, I very seldom use multiple cavity moulds, so it doesn't make much difference to me. Yes, habits are hard to break, like using only the handles the maker recommends, or made themselves.

 I have bad shoulders and back too. It usually takes me a day or two to recover from a casting session. Then a day to recover from sorting/culling. And one more to recover from lube/sizing. I'm learning to do all I can left handed. I keep my right elbow tight to my ribs to keep from stretching out my arm.

It's hell getting old.
