Jeff in NZ

I've been reading and hearing a lot about the new gun laws in NZ. It seems pretty bad for honest citizens who own firearms. I've always enjoyed your comments and articles, so I hope you are OK. Would like to hear your comments as we are on the verge of the same in some states, Virginia in particular. Good luck.

I'm waiting for the other shoe to fall here in Illinois. The only thing we have going for us is the whole down state is mostly pro-gun.

Jeff is a friend and a New Zealand patriot. As far as I know those new laws have no affected him directly. But I know he will chime in soon.

Law changes were introduced after the March 11 shooting.  The government focus was on banning 'military style semi automatic' (MSSA) firearms.  The ban has resulted in ALL centrefire semi auto rifles being outlawed and in addition any firearm with a magazine capacity greater than 10 rounds (5 for a shotgun).  This has come about because the government refused to engage with the firearms community and didn't understand (possibly care) about unintended consequences.  Since the law change there have had to be amendments to fix oversights and new laws are in the system also though thus far have been stymied.  For the first time ever shooters are actually pushing back.  The 'buy back' that last six months was a shambles.  Police were inconsistent in their approach, a data breach of online info and massive non compliance.  The new year will be interesting in terms of what other changes are mooted.  Election year also and the media are finally beginning to wake up.

Cheers from New Zealand

Jeff that lunatic Arden is a dream come true for the clown prime minister we have in Canada. They want to do the same thing here that happened there. I see that the buy back hasn’t worked so well for the progressives there and hope it doesn’t.
We are waiting to see what happens here as it’s going to be announced soon.

Buy Backs haven't worked very well here in the US.  Oh the so called liberals talk about how many guns they bought back or were traded for event tickets, but they don't mention that most of those are old rusty single barreled shotguns many of which don't work.  This is especially true in the "high crime " areas where the residents know darn good and well that the authorities are slow to respond and of little use besides taking reports.

I have been told that self-defense is no longer legal in Canada.  Can anybody confirm this story?  Thanks!

Brodie: it’s laughable. I had to surrender my 14 shot Rem Nylon 66 (made a horrendous profit) but can buy a 10/22. Which one can get off the most shots in a minute? Reckon I could do 7 mag changes with a Ruger easy. Also, BARs and all other sporting semis gone including the likes of .401 selfloaders. Criminal!!!

Cheers from New Zealand

This definitely pertains to us also. Even in Utah, there are politicos that want our firearms. There are certain things I wouldn't mind seeing gone---like bump stocks. But the old saw"Give an inch-Take a mile" is sooooo true.

I truly wish they would offer a buy-back hear. I have many cheap guns I have taken in for repair over the years where the owners never came back or found that the repair would cost more than the gun was worth. I would love to get $100 or more for each of them, then spend it on more good guns. The whole concept is idiotic, but then.......................

Jeff

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question and I'm sorry for your troubles. I'm currently living under New York State's " SAFE ACT" which does nothing to make anyone safe. This farce was created by 3 people in Albany and 2 of the 3 have been convicted of felonies since. Says something, doesn't it?

beagle it would be nice if the last one of the three got convicted also.

Ct tanked shortly after NY, but it went thru the system and passed. Not rammed thru on a weekend like they did in NY.

I hope those in NZ keep pushing back, it's the only thing that can be done.

Anti gunners at work. Rush to judgment feel good legislation, and thereby taking advantage of the uninformed non thinking public.

I once sold a set of 7/8" G&H rings to a former prime minister, I don't think he'll like giving up his Garand!  That was years ago.  What I was getting from him was that he had to go to a rifle club to play with his Garand even back then, but perhaps that was just an option and not something legally mandated.
