what is the purpose of lightly lubricating the case before firing a light load to fireform; vs just shooting without lubrication?? would not shooting a unlubricated case do the same after a couple of fireings??

It is to allow the case to slide as it changes shape. If dry it "could " stretch the wall and make it uneven.

In theory, the lubrication allows the case to slide back to the bolt face, falling block face, and gain full length in the first attempt.

When I first was doing this for a 6X47 from .222 Remington Magnum, I did not lubricate. I noticed the case length variation when trying to trim to uniform length. Reading up and lubing the cases suddenly stopped the length variation.

Someone please tell me what "lightly lubricate" means and how you do that. I have Midway spray on lube and also the paste type, which I can't name at this moment.

I use Hornady "Unique" case lube for this. It has some lanolin in it and is thinner than most others but lubes well. I just get a touch on my fingers and rub them together then apply it to the case so there is just the thinnest of coatings all around. Too much and you could get lube dents or out of round cases. You may need to watch the lube build-up in the chamber as well if you are firing a lot of cases. Squid

I use imperial Sizing Die Wax or Groom and Clean for case lubricant.

Imperial - I stick a finger in the lubricant and spin the case with the other and while tracing lube down the case. There is a light trace of lube along the body and neck.

Groom and Clean - A dab on the palm of one hand, four or five cases picked up n the other hand. The cases are rubbed and rolled between both hands. The case necks are touched for the entire case body. One dab is good for three or four cycles.

The advantage of Groom and Clean is that it is water soluble and easier to get off the cases when done with resizing.
