Hello,

I was looking in the gallery and ran across a picture of a man and his rifle There is also a picture of the rifle setting in a rifle rack, It appears to be very short.. My question is-can someone tell me what this rifle is?

It looks like either a Ruger No.1 or a Farquarason-(I always forget how to spell this word)-with a side hammer on the left side. Can anyone help me? I'm stumped.  Also if anyone has any stats on this machine I would like to hear them.

To help those who are interested in helping me identify the rifle in question, I will help you narrow the search down somewhat. Go to the gallery and find where it says rifles and more rifles. Click on that and then when pictures appear, go to the 10th picture and click on it and that is the rifle that I'm trying to identify.

If any of you members or readers who aren't taking advantage of all this interesting material in the gallery and the info in the CBA info section you are missing a very enjoyable opportunity. Or maybe, you have to be old like me. Please help, my curiosity is killing me, along with all of my other ailments.

I'm going to break silence here only because I'm an old fart and sympathetic . The pictures of the paper wrapped cartridges looked so familiar to me that I had to break out my copy of COTW and "hunt". My eyeball told me the ammo was 10.15 x 61Rmm Jarmann.

However the book says that would make the rifle a BA, which it is NOT.  The preceding entry however, points out the similarities with the 9.5 x 60 Rmm Turkish Mauser. It seems that this was also known as the Turkish Peabody because it was used in the Peabody-Martini single shot. Perhaps one of our experts can identify this as a Peabody-Martini. I cannot.

I hope this gets the ball rolling for you. BTDT - - - - Pepe Ray

It appears to be a 1871 English Henry rifle that was cut down into a carbine. Chambered in .577/.450.

Definitely not a Peabody. I'll put money on the Henry.

Nice rifle all the same. Used by NSW prisons for a long time.

Hello Pepe Ray,

Thanks for your response and interest in helping out. I, like you, found the cartridges to be familiar.

Thanks again,

Hello RicinYakima,

You are definitely correct in my book. I thought I knew my British singles better than I apparently do. Evidently I'm much more knowledgeable on sporting rifles than military arms.

Thanks,

No, I have three books on English single shot rifles. Just searched through them until I found the left side hammer and push button  lever release. I didn't know it, but knew where to look. And it wasn't on the internet!
