Wayne La Pierre's excesses have been a topic of discussion here before, but now they have reached a point where the attorney general of New York is suing the NRA for tax violations and threatening to remove its tax exempt status among other things. This is serious stuff. Mr. LaPierre and a few others might well wind up in jail. Unfortunately, after listening to the allegations, I think a lot of it is probably true. What this all means for the future of the NRA remains to to be seen, but it seems likely that Wayne and others have been looting the coffers to the tune of many millions.

Thanks all for keeping this a reasoned and rational discussion.  I agree with all the above.  It is also vitally important that we support Republican candidates down-ballot, because if Biden should be elected at minimum Republicans must maintain control of the Senate to prevent the Demo-Commies from destroying the country.  I better shut up now before I go off the rails...

My thinking is the NRA needs to move its head quarters out of New York. The attorney general of NY has been suing the NRA for almost six years now constantly. less then 90 days before our primary election is meant nothing more then to cause us NRA members to squabble and point fingers and to act like one is not innocent until proven guilty.  But the mail reason for this latest lawsuit against the NRA is to drain more of the NRA's money . Money it would other wise be using to defend the Second Amendment.

I was tied up with personal business yesterday didn't see this thread until a couple of hours ago so am late to the party.

It has been a while since the CBA Forum's ban of  political and religious topics has been posted and this seems like a good time to remind everybody.

On November 19, 2012 the CBA's Board of Directors voted 10 to 3 to: "ban political and religious discussions on our forum with the exception of notices to alert our members about specific proposed laws or regulations that would restrict the ownership or use of guns."

I think it could reasonably be argued that beagle6's post that started the thread was akin to a notice about something that affects the ownership or use of guns.  Some of the posts that followed were obviously strong political speech and in violation of forum rules.

I am asking for your cooperation in respecting this rule which the Board thought necessary to best achieve a forum dedicated to cast bullet shooting. Thank you.

"Never a word from them in mainstream media and they can afford the expense of buying it. If you read anything it is always left wing propaganda and never countered or rebuffed by the NRA except in the Rifleman."

That's been my major complaint as a Life Member for many years.  All the "rebuff" articles in the AR and AH are just preaching to the choir.  I have told them time and again they should be pro-active in amending or revoking the NFA and the GCA'68.  That would keep the anti-gunners on the defensive and we might even succeed to a degree.

However, as previously mentioned the powers that be at NRA HQ don't want to change the "status quo" because the bigger the anti-gun boogy man is the more money in donations they think they can rake in.

We can not win being defensive, we can only continue to lose.....

All of the above has merit.

I've read over on other forums about the excesses of Wayne, for maybe three years. This revelation was connected to the NRA's poor attitude and performance regarding some competitions.

One detail that cannot beoverlooked is the committment many gun owners have to freedom, self reliance and the Constitution. If the NRA goes away, most gun owners will stay the course.

The recent rotten behaviour of antifa and other protesters who hate America and want to destroy it is not lost on most gun owners and they know what is at stake, seeing the stumbling of some in the NRA as just a distraction.

I have confidence in our fellow supporters of the Constitution. The hatred of guns and gun owners by the media and radical left  is not new and is not going away. The three corrupt entities in our culture are acedemia, politicians and the media, not everyone in these groups but many, who all work daily to try drive America to the left into socialism and all of us know the next place on that slippery slope that socialism leads to.

Some other group will surface to step into the void left by the NRA.

No matter how this plays out for the NRA, I think the best thing we can do for our cause is to get Trump reelected. If Biden wins and( God Forbid) the Democrats get control of the House and Senate, I think we are finished.

An unwritten policy of the forum has been that we don't allow discussions of politics or religion. As so this has always been at the discretion of the forum administrator. As Ed stated above, keeping this thread reasoned and rational will allow it to stay. Please don't stray of topic, or use name calling (which is strictly not allowed), even if some deserve the label.

So stay on the topic of the current situation the NRA has found itself in.

One thing I can add to the thread is that my local gun club president is also the vice-president of the NRA. He is a good man and I have know him for nearly 40 years. I can say he has not been involved in any of the shenanigans and is doing his best to right the ship.

This NRA business has been rattling around in my head like a pea in a tin can. I am really angry, but being angry doesn't help anything unless you do something about it. I went to my local post office and bought a post card (39 cents).

On the front  I wrote:

Fairfax, Va. 22030

I wrote on the back:

I will not send you a dime until Wayne LaPierre is gone and gone without his post employment package.

Then I signed my name, put in my membership number and " member since 1966."

I would invite all of you to invest 39 cents and spread the word. If the BOD get thousands of similar cards they might do something. Think I'll go back to the post office and get a few more cards for my shooting buddies who aren't CBA Members.

Controversy aside, I think the N.R.A. could improve its image by doing something I remember it used to do. I learned responsible firearm ownership and firearm safety from this organization. With the huge Influx of new firearm owners It wouldn't hurt for the N.R.A. to run some public service announcements about firearm safety. It may have internal problems but that does not mean that it still can't help new firearm owners. It might help its image. just my 2 cents.

Going back to maybe 1980 our gun club had required NRA membership to be a member. Last year we changed that, partially due to the rumors about the behavior of Wayne and friends. So now a member has (3) gun rights group he or she wants to belong, including the NRA, but not requiring the NRA. We believe a member needs to be informed about gun legislation, thus the membership requirement.

While it is not doubt that the NRA became taken over by a few power and money hungry individuals, it is still mostly made up of good people and it is my hope that they can weed out the bad, soon.

We can't deny the good they have done for gun owners in the past and we should not toss out the baby with the bath water. However my patience is wearing thin. I will give them a few more years before before I look elsewhere for the majority of my support. With that said I have never put all my eggs in one basket and have supported other lesser gun pro organizations.

The current trend is that about 75% of new members of the CBA are NRA members, this is down from about 85% when I became the membership director 5 years ago.

It has been my experience that most real gun cranks vote on the issue of gun rights, but that can't be said of all.

We are our own best spokesmen and spokeswomen. Know can spread the word about the evils of gun control than us, but here we are preaching to the choir.

When I finally got fed up with the NRA calling and asking for money, I asked the call taker, "Is this call being recorded?"

Silence on the other end...  When she started her script again I interrupted, "When Wayne is finally in jail, if you send me an autographed picture of him behind bars in his orange jumpsuit, I will send $5 per month to his prison canteen fund..."

They stopped calling me!

BOD is packed full of lapierre's cronies. All who tried to stand against him left or resigned last year.

Lot of good passionate posts about the NRA.  I'm a life member and have been since the 70's.  I'm also very distressed by the current events, which may or may not be justified, but, the main motivation is political.  Most folks talk about the BOD and Wayne and the difficult spot they have put the NRA in, and it's certainly not good.  But, let's remember the goal is our rights as individual free thinking people, not to abandon ship.

Remember, we are the NRA.  The leadership is astray, we aren't.  We are the NRA.

I read these posts with a great deal of interest as they go right to the heart of the matter. The NRA has become a huge lobbying machine and that was good on one hand but they also rubbed elbows daily with the Washington elite and slowly became corrupted by it. You can't be around that kind of power without having it do something to your ethics no matter how pure you started out. My biggest beef with the NRA was why they never had any articles or full page adds in the regular media, like the NY Times with statistics and facts to back it up. Plenty of money to buy a full page add in the Times. I don't need to read it but lots of left wing liberals should. I never got an answer on that. I keep my membership with the hope the upper management will get tossed and it pays me in discounts I receive from gun club memberships. I think Gun Owners of America will fill the gap at least for a while. Thanks, Squid Boy

Keep supporting the NRA.  You have a HUGE asset in it.  In New Zealand we have no 2A or NRA and get trampled on by politicians at their whim.

There is a common train of thought that goes something like this:

"You cannot criticize the NRA or call for change!  They are the only thing standing between us and disarmament."

I am sick of that nonsense.  Why do you think the corruption has festered for so long?  The top brass ask themselves "Where else are the gun owners going to go?"  Basically they do what they want, when they want.

I want an organization that fights all the time for everything.  No compromise on anything.  Open the books, bright sunlight on every transaction.

But it will never happen.  The DC swamp corrupts everything.

If the NRA is our voice then where the heck is it? Never a word from them in mainstream media and they can afford the expense of buying it. If you read anything it is always left wing propaganda and never countered or rebuffed by the NRA except in the Rifleman. So the counter articles never reach those that need to see the truth. This is not an attack on anyone here just my opinion on one of the main things that the NRA has failed on. Thanks, Squid

we understand the corruption in our government ... maybe even laughing about the absurdity of it ... but who allotted Wayne his excesses ? ... we should change Wayne and his allotters, not the NRA en toto ...
