After my discussion last week regarding lubes and whether to change or not, decided to purge the Lube'a'sizer and put a fresh batch of new (not 30yrs old) lube into the tube.

It was all working fine until I noticed a change in the sound of the lube melting out of the sizer and falling into the tin I had conveniently placed underneath. Instead of a soft sound it was tink tink tink.

When it was cool enough to only burn slightly I retrieved some of the hard fragments of what was in the lube. I had extruded pieces of lead. I sized about 50 357 projectiles from #2 on Friday night for the weekend and it seems that they were extruding through the lube holes in the sizing die and back into the lube reservoir, no wonder I wasn't getting a full fill.

The projectiles drop from the mould at 359 and I can't use them unsized as they swell the cases too much to chamber so have to size them to 357.

Has anyone else come across this previous, does anyone purge their sizer. When I melted the lube out of the actual sizing die I had extrusions in two of the lube ports and one in the lube channel itself in the die.

Thoughts appreciated.

Thanks guys, ordered some White Label last night. Lucky I have two kidneys as I might be selling one to pay for postage. Ended up buying 32 oz as I can decant some off to a mate who has a bottle or two of red that needs drinking.

One day when I am bored I might just make some 45-45-10 because I can.

I'm going to have to find out what mixture of lead I have in the pot, these came out big and heavy from the Lee mould, I would imagine Lee machine to Lyman #2.

I made a batch of 45-45-10 and it turned out real well. It will for sure last me out as I rarely tumble lube bullets. That said, do like the others have said. It's a PITA to make and utensils used need to be trashed as the mess isn't worth the effort to clean up. At around $13 White Label is a bargain. Gp

Most certainly agree with Brodie and John. I have been using White Label for years, started with the Alox blend and now with 2500 for some thing a little stiffer with complete satisfaction. Fits my agenda, Kiss principal. At this inning of the game, don't need to complicate things any more than they already are.

Brodie is right.  Making it is a mess and time consuming.

Tony,

Do yourself a favor and just buy it from White Label Lube.  16ounces cost $12.95 plus shipping.  Cooking it is problematic unless you are well versed in the hazards of organic chemistry.  It needs to be done outdoors (unless you have a fume hood) and far away from any open flame.  The vapors are highly flammable and toxic.  If you do it yourself the safest way is in a small crock pot which well then be useless for anything else afterward.  That 16 oz. bottle will probably last you the a good part of the rest of your life it not all of it.  I have used it on rifle and pistol bullets and not found it wanting in any load I have tried.

Good luck

Thanks guys, this is an RCBS machine that I've had since the early 80's, never seen anything like this before.

The only reason I bothered to clean it, and found the problem is I wanted to change the lube, or just size and then tumble lube. I've been toying with the idea of making a batch of 45-45-10 just for interest sake. I've never seen the problem with any of my 30 or 44 cal dies, but they mostly fall pretty close to size and the die just makes sure they're round.

I may have to check the hardness of what I dropped, but that shouldn't make a difference. Oh well, something else to do during the week.

and so the question comes up :: ... IF IF IF cast bullets only need a teensy amount of lube ....  has anybody determined if match bullets need a perfect ring of lube ??  as opposed to a little smear on one random side .

i might mention that for my slovenly plinking approach, i haven't used a sizer-luber for 60 years ... i grease my fingers, pick up the bullet and set it down; no two bullets lubed the same.    my 2 to 4 inch plinker groups don't indicate any problems; no leading.  if my bullets are wrong  size, i polish the mold or buy another mold; 30 years ago i made squishers for my serious attempts, but still finger-lubed.

i am always asking everybody else; someday soon i need to put together a real akrit rig and do some work myself.  been 30 years since i tried for good cast groups .  my guilt dipstick is reading almost full ...

I'VE HAD lYMAN 45 AND 450 LUBRISIZERS SINCE 1960, replaced lube many times over the years. I remove the obvious parts. put the machine in a cookie pan, held up in the air and tilted, in the oven and all the lube comes out. I have never seen pieces of lead as shown, and I bumped thousands of bullets, cleaned dozens of sizer dies. Something else is happening, it ain't the machine or lyman dies.

I have 4 Lyman 450's.  Guess its spring cleaning time.

Thanks for sharing.  Everyday I learn something new on this site!

Yup!  Lyman size dies very often shave particles off lead bullets when sizing.  That is why I quit using them for match bullets and went to RCBS instead.
