i stumbled upon an interesting discussion of parallax in target scopes ....  interesting because there is understandably much confusion about the subject .

to be fore-armed, i will simplify the relationship of the lenses for you before you get lost in the opinions in the * url * i will post below.

with respect to  parallax :

the front lens has only one job:  to focus light rays on the crosshair that is in the middle of the scope. ( that can only happen at one target distance at a time ... pick near or far ...  ( adjust for the desired target distance ) .

the rear...or eyepiece ... lens has only one job ... to focus on the crosshair....  therefore if you want to see both crosshair and target together the front lens has to have already done it's job ::  put a clear focused picture of the target on the crosshair .
