Additions? Changes?

THE BETTER SHOOTING LIST

This list shows the steps that may be taken to get better shooting, more accurate shooting, with cast bullets.

This is about cast bullets and 30 caliber rifles.

Accuracy, here, is 5-shot, 5-group, 100-yard group size averages.

Accuracy, here, is in these categories:

>2”

1.5”-2”

 1”-1.5”

 <1”

<.5” (We haven’t found a credible report of anyone reliably shooting < .5".

Threshold. Here, it is understood that there is a reasonable, inexpensive, available threshold. For example, variation in shooter does not vary accuracy much, as long as the shooter has a reasonable degree of skill and ability-the threshold.

THE BS LIST OF THINGS THAT AFFECT ACCURACY

If long term group size is between these sizes, the items listed will/may reduce group size:

2”

See: THE BEGINNER'S RECIPE FOR CAST BULLET RIFLE ACCURACY, above.

1.5”

Improve the shooter’s ability

Try another powder

Use better bench rest equipment

Use a better telescopic sight

Change the frequency of barrel cleaning

Try another bullet

Glass bed the rifle action

1

 Try another bullet lube

Try powder charge increments <.5 grains

Measure or control the concentricity of bullet/case/chamber/?

Use wind flags, a wind speed meter, thermometer or barometer

Change the trigger to one “better than” the Savage Accu-trigger or equivalent.
.5”

Fix/improve the barrel crown

Control neck tension

Orient the bullet or case or both

Try another primer

Clean primer pockets, Uniform primer pockets, Uniform flash holes, De-burr flash holes

Explore the relationship between accuracy, BHN and pressure

Shoot bullets in the order cast

Weigh powder charges to .1 grain

Weight segregate cases

Weight segregate bullets in categories < .5 grain

Change OAL in < .010” steps

Change case brand/headstamp

0”

Joe, I have no data. I only have what has worked for me, so it is opinion. Ric

What I'm hoping for here are suggestions for additions, deletions or change in category for these actions. A guy shooting 1.75" groups shouldn't be told that cleaning primer pockets will get him to 1" territory.

Where are you guys?

Joe, It has now dawned on me what this post really means; a method for reducing groups size for every rifle, a universal formula. It may be doable, but I never looked for that, just a means to get one rifle to shoot better. Kept thinking you were looking for a process, not a carved in stone law.  (I was never accused of being the brightest star in the sky!)
