Ran across these interesting articles on the early days of smokeless powder. I did not realize that sporting shooters were a driving force for Schultze's powder. Neat about Annie Oakley smuggling it into France.

I have no disdain for French science. You had Pasteur (Microbiology), Curie (Radioactivity), Foucault (pendulum that proved the earth is round and rotates), Descartes (algebra), and  Vielle (Poudre-B, smokeless powder). Their arrogance can however get in the way occasionally.

Perhaps the use of Butter, Garlic, and Olive oil were the height of French organic chemistry at the time.

Great articles!  The fact that the French near killed Annie Oakley is a little unnerving,,,,,,,.
