New to this site but not new to casting bullets.  I down in Southeast Louisiana and recently picked up a new NOE mold 311-199-SP-K5 3 cavity.  I've got some good one cast and about to do the sizing and gas checking.

I'm actually holding off as I my get a new sizer.  My older sizer for the RCBS sizer lubricator is 0.308"/  I'm thinking I may go with a new sizer for the STAR sizer either 0.310" or 0.311".

Looking for suggestions...What are some of your thoughts on sizing these bullet for an AR 308 Win and other 30 cal rifles.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome aboard Shadow.  Perhaps you would be kind enough to tell us:  "What evil lurks in the hearts of our cast bullet loads?".  I for one would like to know.

Thank you all for the help.  I was digging around and actually have a LEE push through 0.311" sizer kit I got in a trade.   So I installed the Hornady crimp on gas checks on a few without any lube.  They say that's the best way so no lube gets under the checks.

Then I applied some White Label  Carnauba Red lube in the two lube grooves the passed them back through the sizer to smooth the lube evenly.

I have the RCBS expander for lead bullets that use to prepare the case necks, also a slight chamfer of the case mouth to also aid in proper seating so the bullet doesn't shave as it is pressed into the case necks.  This worked very well as I made the DUMMY cartridge for test fitting the chamber and cycling.

Now to decide on a starting load to run a tester round to see how things go...

Looking at the bullet dimensions, the bearing body is about 0.2" longer than the 308's neck length. You may have to seat it below the case neck (not dangerous, but gas cuts the exposed part a lot) to get it to chamber and extract properly. Jamming a bullet into a semi-autos throat is not what you want to do. Sizing to 0.311" is fine. Seat the bullet just short of touching and give it a try.

... sounds as tho you are on the right track ... and we don't hear much about cast in the non-.22 ar rifles ......  i wonder if there is a practical compromise between accuracy and reliability in the big AR ... will a snug bullet for accuracy cause feeding problems ? ...  i am jealous because i would have to sell about 5 of my old-friend guns to spring for an AR -308 and find out for myself. ( g ) .  please be sure to allow us follow along with what you may discover ..

don't forget ... we would like to know ...

what the Shadow knows ....

My dummy loaded round was measured to be just touching the start of lands as seated, and the bullet could be seated slightly deeper as not the contact as much.  This seemed to be about perfect for the AR chamber of my gun with this cast bullet...

Well, I got to digging around and found a 0.311" Lee push through sizer, so I applied the Hornady crimp on gas checks to the bullet first, while sizing without lube as they say that helps secure the checks better.  Then I lubed the two grooves with White Label's Carnauba Red lube and passed them back through the 0.311" sizer for a smooth application.

My next step is to actually load some light loads and test them to see how they fair out in my rifle...  Thanks for the help, much appreciated!

hi ... and welcome !

i started casting about 1955 ... and knew Nothing !

so i decided to follow the scientific method, get organized, and make a list of everything known for sure about cast bullets.

to date i have gathered but a single line on the back of a rumpled business card ... "  bullet must be a snug fit in the throat ' .... it is so written  ..... we must obey ....

*********************

what seems to work well is to use either a soft lead upset or some Cerrosafe to make an image of the throat and beginning of the rifling in your chamber.   measure this image and size to just under that throat diameter.

you can use the " search " button here on this forum to find details on using the Cerrosafe and lead slug upset.

******************

then, after we do the one thing that is proven to be most valuable .. .. we can get back to the more fun mysteries of  cast bullets ... lubes, gas checks, alloys, more or less grooves, and many other unsettled nuances of good results with shooting lead ...

hoping this helps and that we hear how this latest project is going  ...  we are still hopeful we will find another known rule ( g ) ...   ken

Hello and welcome. What do you not like about the RCBS other than the size? YOu could buy a new sizer die, .309, .311, or .311.
