What in the Heck are we Panicstricken about now.

After a couple of years of relative sanity, a couple or three months ago ALL the powder and all the primers except large rifle and 50 BMG disappeared from the local Sportsman's Warehouse. I checked last week and the shelves are still bare.

I thought maybe we had grown up after the hysteria when Obama was elected -- silly me.  At least I assumed that the fearful ones all had several hundreds of powder in their bunkers and wouldn't have room for more.

Do we know what has caused the latest sheep-like stampede? Even these easily spooked folks, who probably aren't going to launch any rockets to the moon, surely know that a virus is too small to shoot.

Brodie,

Enter the 2021 CBA National Tournament which will be near Kansas City and I will drive you over to Sierra, 40 miles away and you can buy a peck of those rejects with the lead weep still stuck on the nose. They shoot fine.

The day late and a dollar short slow learners.

Anyone with a lick of sense would have bought cheap and stacked it deep when Obama was elected the first time.

With 5,000,000 new gun owners the related ammo shortage associated with such an increase in demand while much manufacturing and supply chain problems my guess is folks that have the ability to reload are stocking up.

John,

Not much problem with components here, but ammo is all gone. Fear from Seattle and Portland had people driving from the coast all the way to Walla Walla and Spokane trying to buy guns. Most didn't know they couldn't just take them home with them that day. When people are afraid, they will whip out the old credit card and pay anything for what they think they need.  Bottled water is going for $5 a gallon in LA and east TX this afternoon.

Yes, I'm still loading with powder from yard sales and estates. Primers I bought 2008 and cast most of my bullets.

If you are desperate, if I have anything you really need, I could meet you at Biggs, OR?

I appreciate the comments on the cause of the present panic. i suspect they cover the reasons pretty well.

Thanks Ric for the generous offer. I'm good and not desperate, just bemused and surprised at the fear.

I have faith that Americans will be sane enough that this too shall pass without the black helicopters coming for us.

John: With the major manufacturers selling every 9X19 or 223- 5.56 they can put on the shelves  for twice or more what the rounds cost just a few weeks ago, you can see why no small rifle or pistol primers are available. I saw an on line offer for 9X19 @ $489 per 1,000  When the manufacturers put in an order for several  million primers they have more pull than the shop that orders 50,000. Supply and demand. Glad I stocked up before this round of gouging took over. Gp

Ric, some of those folks drove all the way to Missoula.  It seemed to me that their first look was of confusion, then anger, when it was explained to them that the laws they were so eager to get passed were now keeping them from getting what they wanted, so desperately.  Then came many attempts to circumvent those same laws.

Do we know what has caused the latest sheep-like stampede?

My opinion about that is the current Presidential race and the promises made by Joe and his team mate.

I used to  drive truck on the south side of LA.  Watts, Inglewood, Redondo Beach, Santa Monica, Long Beach, and Orange County.  The only trouble I had was in Watts and it was because I was driving during a teamster strike.  This idiot in the parking lot of a liquor store started ragging on me because I was non-union.  I finally bought him off with a can of beer.  After that when I got there one of the owners came out and watched the truck, and I had no further trouble.  They had some of the biggest dogs I have ever seen in those liquor stores, and they didn't give me any grief either.

I didn't mind it so much when Weatherby moved, but when Sierra went to Missouri I almost cried.  I had been buying and shooting their rejected bullets (a piece of the lead weep didn't fall off ) and really hated to see them go.  Now I just make my own.

I believe it was caused by a bunch of new gun owners buying ammo in bulk AND the same scallywags that hoarded primers in order to drive the prices up the last time. I understand buying in bulk when you actually handload. It's the profiteering that grinds my stones. Luckily my local guy has been good at finding supplies, AND his prices haven't changed much either.

Things are almost sane here in New Hampshire. Took a trip to the LGS last Saturday and they had a pretty good selection of components. They had all sizes but not all brands of primers, I wanted some Bullseye, which they were out of so I settled for Unique (they had 1lb and 4lb), the brass and jacketed bullet shelves were well stocked. They also had a good selection of loaded ammo, with a 200 round limit on .223 and 9 mm. Can't wait for the stupidity to end.

Yep. The crime bill in ‘94, Obama in ‘08 and ‘12, the threat of Hillary in ‘16 and now the Chinese virus, cities on fire, and the threat of Biden have caused a lot of people to wake up in a panicky cold sweat. As the progressives say there have been many teachable moments over the last 30 years. My teachable moment was the first Gulf War when primers, 5.56, and 9mm disappeared from shelves. Since then I buy what I think I could need when ever I see it between the panics and gouging. With no capital gains taxes the DuPont SR 4759 I opened today was sure a good deal when I bought it in the mid 80s.

LOL! John.

This is not that much different than the 1950's and 1960's, except for the news media. Then we had to wait for the news once a day on the radio (no TV where I lived) or the weekly trip to the town to read "US News and World Report" and "Newsweek" at the free Carnegie Library.

I'm a lot less panic stricken as long as I stay off the political channels.  That, and I've got plenty of primers and Unique.

The problem John is getting inventory from the suppliers to the SW distribution center.  I checked on some stuff a week ago and there's none in the warehouse to send out to the stores.

To me alot of them have not learn from the last times when we had deal with this and like stated is worst now for all that is going on and the new owners of guns and getting into reloading. For those of us been into it for sometime now is ahead of the game. from the last time around I was short to me on 22lr  after Trump got in and the price drop I stock up for what I needed and now for how it is I am ok now on all I think I needed. To me it will get worst for how things are going. I think one of the things is the defunding the police in some  areas and the people will not put up with what is or might happened around them.

Dave ... hah !  i bet we could steer this thread right off the road bragging about hot rods ,...  but since it used to be a cast bullet ( kinda ) topic ...

i will mention that i notice a lot of serious gun guys are also car guys ... also many have musical abilities ....

i like to think it is about enjoying life ...

ken

oh, i got the 442 for it's handling ... after i got out-drug by even ramblers, after the first corner i looked back at their letter-S skid marks and clouds of dust from their adventures into the weeds ...  my personal best from St. Louis to Des Moines was 5.5 hours .. obeying several speed limits and not running any farmer trucks off the road ...
