Q. What kind of cast bullet shooters make up the CBA?
A. A. Shooters who enjoy the challenges of having more control over the the quality & accuracy of their ammunition than the reloader using store bought jacketed & cast bullets, likes the lower cost that casting your own bullets offer and the self satisfaction of making their own bullets. Our membership is varied & includes both rifle & handgun shooters, many have active interests in both. Some like to experiment with cast bullets in a quest for ultimate accuracy, others are mostly interested in hunting, plinking or using cast bullets for low cost practice. Only 20% of the CBA membership enjoys & participates in competing with others in CBA matches. At this time we have approximately 1600 members from the U.S. and 11 foreign countries.

Q. Is the CBA only for those interested in competitive shooting?
A. A. Despite what you may have heard or read on other forums, roughly 80% of our members are not interested in match shooting, although many of these non-competitors are interested in getting the best possible accuracy from their cast bullet loads. As an indication of this variety, 90% of the articles in The Fouling Shot and discussions on the forum are not directly related to competitive shooting.

Q. How & who governs the CBA?
A. A. The CBA is governed by a board of directors consisting of 18 CBA members. The board includes the officers; president, vice-president, treasurer & secretary as well as 8 regional directors. The rest of the board is made up of directors holding specific jobs such as publication editor, membership director, web master, director of registered competitions, director of military competitions, director of postal competitions & director of services. All CBA members are eligible to serve on the board and there are usually one or two vacancies each year offering members interested in having a voice in the management of the association the opportunity to serve.
The annual meeting is held at the same time & place as the CBA National Tournament, but a large share of the association’s work is done by email "meetings" throughout the year.

Q. What types of firearms are used in CBA matches?
A. A. Contrary to most beliefs, it does not take expensive or customs firearms to compete in CBA competitions. There are 7 official classes of rifles & handguns used in our traditional benchrest type matches. Two of these are for factory rifles, hunting or sporter and varmint weight. Additionally our military program for surplus military rifles has an additional four classes providing additional opportunities for competing with minimal investment. Our postal matches include all of the above classes, plus matches for a variety of other types of firearms such as several types of handguns. If you have an interest in competition, it is likely that you already have a suitable firearm to give it a try.

Q. How do I start casting bullets?
A. About the best advice anyone can give is to get a good book or two on casting such as the current Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook or the out of print, RCBS Cast Bullet Manual which is available through eBay & Amazon. They will give you a good idea of the equipment you will need to get started, which can be very minimal. The CBA forum & The Fouling Shot can be a great source of information. Using the forum you can get answers to just about any question you may have, both basic & advanced. The forum is also a good place to possibably finding a mentor in your area that can help you get started. Just post a message stating you are looking for help and give your general location. Then you and your prospective mentor can communicate through private messages. Most of the CBA members started on their own with possibably a book to guide them and didn’t have a forum with a wealth of knowledge to rely on. You will find CBA members very helpful and will share their knowledge freely. So what ever route you take, there are many resources at your disposal.
