12ga buck and ball loads

over the winter when the wood stove fire dies down to hot coals, I tried casting some of the lyman 7/8oz 12ga slugs with the support in the base. I took standard velocity 1 1/8oz trap loads and cast the shot. they came out nice and shot well in my single shot 12ga. then I added a card wad over the same powder charge that was in the shell, put 3 00 buck pellets in there side by side, another card wad, then the cast slug. I used a roll crimp tool to keep everything in place. these shot very well and cant wait to try them out this fall.

While I was trying to learn about loading brass 12 gauge cases with black powder, I had some issues too. To fill the case I was using 120 grains of FFF and 18 balls of .310". Then they told me about using more than one wad to fill excess space in the case.

Those may not be allowed in some states,as hunting loads! I have shot a lot of those loads in a side-by-side double 12 muzzlelaoader,load one barrel for mouse, other for bear. A very good load if someone kicks your frontdoor in!--nosee.

The old Stevens 311 handled them a lot better than me! I shot the ten I loaded in one day, but was pretty bruised at the end.

AHA!

Another double 12 ML. They are a hoot. I have had a SxS double 12 percussion for several years and can tell you that they are killers on wild turkeys, sharptails and clays when loaded with a charge of FF and a load of #6 & #7 shot mixed.

Have never tried buck & ball but did load both barrels with 00 buck once. Definitely an alley cleaner. It was impressive.

I've been doing a lot of slug and round ball testing in the last couple of months both 12 and 20ga. Also a few black powder shot loads. One thing I have found is that a .735 RB over 40gr. of Blue Dot in a 12ga. will clear your sinus cavities. LOL Gp

I shoot that .735 over 80g of fff. Same results for sinuses and the nose hair goes with it.

D'skid: You guys give me too many ideas. I got 5lbs. of real BP now so those RB loads might be a good way to burn up the Triple 7 I bought early on.. Heck, maybe we could get a 73cal. postal match started. Gp

I was trying to reproduce the "leopard" loads made in South Africa during the early 1900's. I found out that 90 grains of Black and 12 shot was the best at 10 yards. A six inch even pattern and enough velocity.

I have an old 10ga ml I load with 100gr ffg and a patched, 660gr, .760 round ball. I had dixie make me a mold for it. plenty of power. goes through the deer and the tree behind it. with 80gr and 1 1/2oz #4 shot make for an excellent turkey load with 7 pellets going through a soda can at 50yds.
