Two of my Nagants shoot Hornady 165GR Sp.308 jacketed bullets with 44GR IMR 4064 very well. One is a post war 1948 M44 Big five rifle with a Darrel scout mount and a 2-7 NcStar pistol scope. The barrel is counter bored and is bite and shiny. When i was cleaning the barrel i could not find a trace of copper in it. The second rifle is a M39 built on a 1897 receiver. Both rifles shoot this load 1 to1 1/2 inch groups @ 100yd. I have three deterrent types of surplus ammo all of them are .309. Both rifles shot Horady 123GR 7.62x39 bullets well with 45gr IMR 4064.

I casted some C309-150-F bullets for my 30-30 and loaded some in 54R to see what happens.

I originally started at 6.5 grains and they sounded sub sonic (pop), but were OK for 50 yards. I raised the load to 7.5 then 8.0. I like to use minimum loads for plinking the 8 is a satisfactory compromise for me. Low noise, no recoil and fair groups at 50 yards Its been too rainy for me to bring out the chrono. I hope to get to the range today with my lead sled to eliminate some of the human element. I was shooting a 8x56R hungarianwith TB at a military only fun shoot and the range master wondered if my gun was OK, Commented that you hardly need ear protection it was so quiet. i am a TB fan.

What velocity do you figure you are getting? I shoot 11g T.B. with 155-190g plain base bullets and they chronograph 1200fps or thereabouts.

I shot the 4.5 of Bulls Eye with the 311008 at 100 yards today.Groups were  a bit under 3". Report was so low a fellow at the range thought i was having ignition problems!

Just a thought .

Slug your bore. From what I have one Mod 44 that .314 to what I have read.

Must be a large range of sizes in bores?????///:thinking::hunt:

8.0 grains TrailBoss. CCI or WIN primer. Lee C309-150-F GC sized to 308 or Lee CTL312-180-2R as dropped noGC, both Lee ALOX lubed. 50 yards in the short barreled M-N M38 shoots like a 22LR. Still working on this load. May put a MOJO sight on for better sight picture.

And slug the bore. EDITED after Greggs Post.

New plinker 7.62 Rimmed load tried today. It is 4.5 of Bulls Eye and the 311008 Lyman with a Fed LP primer.Velocity was 1130 with Sd's of 10-12.Groups at 50 yards shown were typical (1"-1.6” with issue sights or scope) Shot 30 offhand at a 10 x 10 gong @ 100 and rang it silly.May not be a tack driver, but cheap.Sight set at #5 put them 2-1/2” high at 50 and close enough at 100.

I use 11.5 grains of Unique in mine with a 314299 bullet. It's very mild and I can hit the steel swinging targets out two hundred yards.

I have used any 30 cal. that pours .314 in my 7.62 X 54. That includes round balls, pistol bullets and rifle bullets without gas checks. I have used mostly 6 grs of Trail Boss but Bullseye and Red Dot work well too. Most will shoot like a 22 rifle out to 25 yards.

I really like Trail Boss for light loads it's fluffy and takes up a lot of space making it harder to double charge.

Welcome , you're in the right place.

I shoot alot of  the SAEC0 #325 ( .32 caliber SWC )with 6g of Bulllseye and it shots  1.5” or a bit less @ 50 yards. It casts.314 out of my range scrap and it a nice little plinker load.
