Airguns give them a try

This last two years I have been really having fun with my airguns.I had( like all of us) them as a kid and when trying to shoot small-bore had Diana 100's and 75's for awful-hand practice at home. I have set up home ranges from 10 meters to 100 yards.I shoot every day and am really going though the pellets. I have been shooting a high end Air Arms TX200 .177,RWS 48 and RWS 36.This last weekend I picke dup an older Crosman 760 with rifled barrel and a Crosman 1322 pistol carbine thing. Both of those are shooting quite well. The 760 with open sight shoots many 5 shots groups into 1” at 25 meters and the 1322 pump 22 shoot the same size groups at 15 yards.THose neat old American made airguns gunsare growing on me!I cant see myself shooting 22 LR much at ranges under 50 yards. These airguns do just fine. The TX and RWS 48 .177's shoot 3/4"-1/2” at 50 yards often enough not to be a surprise.it lets me save all of my 22 ammo as well until things free up. A few other CBA guys I know have also went to airguns like the Marauders and RWS 34 for offhand practice.

Recently picked up a Crossman 2100 at Bi-Mart. New, $67. It's a .177, capable of firing BBs but I am guessing a steel BB does the rifled barrel no good. So I am using just pellets, either wad cutters or pointed. With pellets it's a single shot and actually sort of clumsy and slow to load, but quite accurate. The sights seem to be “on” right out of the box. First shot went into an empty milk can, punched through the front of the can and pellet stayed in the can. The trigger leaves a lot to be desired, but for $67 I'm not going to complain. Pest birds had best beware.

Bought it to avoid depleting my supply of CB long .22 ammo. I have not seen any for sale since Sandy Hook.

Here's a photo of the paper target used at 10 meter offhand and 25 yard benchrest. For offhand, the metal silhouettes are used at 20 yds for chickens, 30 yards for pigs, 36 yards for turkeys, and 45 yards for rams.

Sound like a great winter postal. Targets are readily available here from the Shooting Federation of Canada, so they must be available in the States too. Grouch

I got interested in HW springers. then decided to get a HW 35E with the breech latch in 22 and PAL rated in Canada. Followed by a used HW 55 with target aperture sights in 177.

This lead to my daughters' Daisy Avanti 499 for their early training. This might be my favourite rifle used in the garage with my girls.

I have gone backwards in airgun techno this last few months. I went from a TX200 to a Sheridan 5mm to a very good shooting Crosman 760 and now a Crosman 2100 shooting BB's.Both Crosmans are older metal receiver models with rifled barrels.Scoped the 760 can do under 3/4” at 25 meters at times. This new to me 2100 I had to tear down a and clean up after I bougt it as it wouldn't hold a pump.It was a cruddy valve and its back working. It wouldn't shoot a pellet very well scoped at 25 meters. About 1-2” was average. I shot 5 BB;s scoped and they shot 2-2.5” groups and one under 1.5".I took off the scope and shot some at 10 meters and 3/4” kneeling.I am pretty happy with my little BB gun.

Thought I better start practicing for next winter. Twelve, 10-shot groups this morning. Offhand. I'm going to go soak my arms in water now.

Well I'll think about it but I wouldn't want to do this until next December, January, February maybe March. That would give me plenty of time to round up targets and rules.

I'll second that.  And he gets to make the rules. No matter how simple or complex -- no complaining or the complainer becomes the match director.

Talk to Pat or Tom they already know how to make such an unofficial work so the shooters have fun. John

OH BOY! Here we go that's why I suggested this for next year by the time we get everybody satisfied with the rules it will be a next winter shoot.

I think that CBE has a .20 cal pellet mold maybe a 22 too, I can't imagine trying to cast a hollow base 14 grain pellet the .17 would be even less.

If I had to cast to shoot a pellet gun I wouldn't own one.that's why I like them lately, just a gun and a tin of pellets.good to know about the swaged balls for your matches.I have a bunch of .535 hornadys that shoot in my TC I can use.

I know you're kidding but says who. As long as it's not CBA sanctioned we could use marbles if we wanted to. I know the ML matches say you have to use a CAST round ball but a lot of guys don't and as long as they're happy so am I. As a matter of fact I think I'll take that out of the rules for the upcoming year.
