Over the last year or so I have kinda gotten intrested in the early model Marlin's . And I just recently added a First Model that was manufactured in 1965 the first year of production . Starting at the bottom is my new to me First Model circa 1965 . It is in great shape metal wise , but someone in their great wisdom saw fit to refinish it with some ultra reddish stain . It also has a Charles Daly scope that needs to go SOON . Anyway the scope thats there will be okay for working loads . Then I can replace before hunting season . Afterwards I can address the stock issue. Next up is another First Model of 1968 vintage . This one also has a recent addition old Weaver K2.5 . Above that is my First Model “Square Lever” . This one is circa 1971 which was the last year of manufacture for the First Model and as far as I know the only year of manufacture for the square lever rifles ! And finally on top is my Second Model circa 1971 . This one was made in the first year of production for the Second Model and also has a recent addition old Weaver K2.5. I have a couple more old Weavers on the way and hopefully I can get them working on the other two rifles before hunting season. It is my intention to set up the 1965 model with the Ranch Dog 265 grain bullet , to set up the 1968 rifle with the Ranch Dog 285 grainer , to set up the First Model square lever with the Ranch Dog 300 grainer and to usa a group buy bullet mould I got from castboolits of 434-330 in the Second Model ! Last season I had all but the gun from 1965 and again had each rifle set up with a different bullet . But am sorry to say never got far enough along to use these to take any deer . Hopefully this year will be different .>

It's been over a month since this uhm “new and improved forum” was turned loose . And without a doubt this is the worst of the 5 or 6 forums I frequent as far as lay out and user friendliness is concerned .

Pulled the triggers on the MS 270 and 308 . The safety makes no difference on these so now my 270 has a double set like the 243 !

I'm going to take my three Mannlicher Schoenauer MCA rifles in to the shop tomorrow . My 243 and 270 have tang safties while the 308 has the earlier side safety .

The 308 and 243 both have double set triggers while the 270 is single trigger .

I wanna see if the trigger from the 308 can be swapped into the 270 and if not I'll move the one from the 243 to the 270 for load work . If I can get the one from the 308 to work in the 270 I'll swap them out and put the 308 on Gunbroker later this year .

I'm leaving for the Philippines March 9th . So I wanna get the three AR-15's straight with handloads . Might work on the 450 Bushmaster so more if I get the Grendel , 6.8 and 22 Nosler straight . Also the Mannlicher Schoenauer MCA 270 with cast and quite possibly Nosler , Barnes , Hornady and Combined Technology 130's .

Have two tree's I wanna cut down and turn into firewood for a couple friends . And last but not least get my loading room back into a more sane and organized look !

I have some brass for my 270 WIN and 6.8 SPC to take to the shop tomorrow . Wanna resize and prime them all as well as bell the necks on the 270 brass . Then when I get home tomorrow night I can load the 40 or so 6.8's with the Hornady 120 SST and load the 30+ 270 cases with that RCBS 150 gr cast offering !

Got a bunch of stuff loaded for my Grendel AR using the Hornady 123 SST , Nosler 120 BT and the Nosler 100 BT . 118 rounds of different charges with those three bullets

Also got 40 or so loaded for my brand new 22 Nosler upper . Just loaded Nosler 50 and 60 BT's .

Got the 270 molds cleaned up and cast with them twice already . The RCBS mold looks pretty decent but the verdict is out on that cheap Lee mold . I was able to get the RCBS bullets sized checked and lubed tonight !

Well just ordered a .278” die , a RCBS 27-150GC mold , a Lee 27-135GC mold , some checks and a top punch . Might be casting for the 270 week after next !

Well ended up with a good season !

Got several with cast bullet 444's , several with AR's , a pair with buckshot and two with bolt actions .

The last deer I I used the circa 1966 Mannlicher Schoenauer MCA 270 WIN and FACTORY Winchester 130 Power Points. Had owned the gun exactly 6 days when I popped the deer .

I anticipate getting a mold or two for the 270 SOON and working out a decent load for the rifle and hopefully take a deer with it using cast next year . I've killed a pretty decent pile of deer with home cast bullets already but they were all in lever actions and the vast majority were with 444's . Time to branch out a touch .

Got the Mannlicher Schoenauer MCA Carbine 270 yesterday . Mounted a decent old Leupold Vari XII 3-9 I had . After freezing my backside off this morning I rode over to the gun club and sighted this bad boy in with YUCK factory loads . Winchester 130 grain PowerPoints to be exact . Amazingly they shot pretty well . So I can hunt with this one a few times before seasons end on January 7th !

I just won a Mannlicher Schoenauer MCA Carbine in 270 WIN . I already have one in 243 WIN and a rifle in 308 all three MCA's . I've liked these things since I was about 7 or 8 years old looking at pics in my pops old Shooters Bibles . Now I have a light cartridge and a medium cartridge . Here are some pics the seller took . Obviousely I've not had it in hand .Hopefully I'll get it Tuesday or Thursday of next week as the guns only about 200-250 miles away .

At the beginning of the season I was a little skeptical of the 6.8 SPC but it actually did a good job using FACTORY 120 SST's . I'm still skeptical of the 6.5 Grendel but perhaps in the next three weeks I'll find out about that one as well .

I've got four or five unblooded rifles I'd like to get blooded this year . But I dunno if I wanna take that many more deer this year lols !

Gonna drag myself outside in a few hours and sit in a tree until about 10 . Think I'll take my recently built AR-10 in 260 REM shooting the Hornady 123 SST pushed with 39 grains IMR4064 set off with a CCI200 all crammed in unfurled Lapua brass 😉👍🏻

I think tomorrow after I get in from the woods I'll bounce some ideas off my gunsmith buddy about making a sizing die for the .730 slugs to get them down to say .700-.705 😉

I suppose if I was to shoot cast in an AR from time to time I'd need to take the gas block and the tube off and clean them in a sonic cleaner 🤔

I think I need to look into the pro's and con's of shooting cast in an AR . I might not mind trying cast in my 450 Bushmaster .

6pt-sika posted this 18 December 2016

wait I need to use Mt Sourdoughs 433-450PB Hamfist bullet and a version or two of his 433-420GC Huckleberry . Think he sent me 2 or 3 versions of that and I've only used one . So when I'm done with the heavy hitters I think I'll set my ballard rifled 444 up with the BRP/RD 432-400GC , the Retro 444P with my MM/RD 432-325GC or 432/365GC and the 1967 24” gun with the RD 432-240GC or 432-265GC .

Well unless I've overlooked a mold or two I'm down to three left that have not killed a deer . The LBT 433-400GC which is in my 2001 444 as we speak . The Lyman 429649 which is in the Retro 444P as we speak and finally the NEI 429350 that's in my circa 1967 444 , this one actually drops about 370 when cast of WW's .

That's supposed to say BRP/RD 432-400GC HP . But the POS won't let me edit the post .
