Regarding rifle to pistol, opinions about legality differ, and ATFE won't respond to questions, one has to think about how much money one is willing to spend, and how much time you're willing to spend in the county jail and / or state and / or federal prison proving your opinion is right.
In March or 2018 near St Paul, Minnesota, there was a raid where the Ramsey Co Sheriffs seized dozens of firearms including a "machine gun and short-barreled shotgun", after a 13-year-old autistic boy made a comment in school about shooting class mates. The kids father was charged with felony improper storage and possession of illegal firearms.
Four months later, at a press conference Sheriff Serier
"providing alarming photos of a tangle of rifles dumped on a mattress."
It's very interesting that it took "Four months later, the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension concluded that what was originally thought to be a machine gun was actually a semi-automatic rifle, and a short-barreled shotgun was a pistol that fired bullets, not shells. The sheriff hadn’t bothered to confirm."
It's also interesting to hear that the there was no followup in the main stream press that the firearms were not restricted, but only in the alternative press, and then as part of an investigation of improprieties in the Sheriff's department.
I wonder if the father ever got his firearms back and how much damage they suffered when they were "dumped" on the mattress.
Also, like the IRS, if ATFE in one region sends you a opinion letter, that doesn't mean another region has to agree with it.
Just throwing in a touch of reality.
